- 1.Solve 2x² − 7x + 3 = 0.
- 2.There are 50 adults on a coach to the Lake District. Every adult is either a man or a woman. There are 10 more men than women. Work out the number of men.
- 3.Work out the value of (x − 4)/2 + 3 when x = 10
- 4.A taxi fare in pounds is given by F = 2.50 + 1.20m, where m is the number of miles travelled. Sam takes a taxi for a journey of 6 miles. Work out the fare.
- 5.The point (5, −12) lies on the circle x² + y² = 169, which has centre (0, 0). Work out the equation of the tangent to the circle at (5, −12), giving your answer in the form y = mx + c.
- 6.Solve the inequality 5x − 3 > 2x + 9.
- 7.Solve the simultaneous equations y = 2x − 1 and y = x² − x − 1, giving both pairs of solutions.y = 2x − 1y = x²
- 8.A phone company works out a monthly bill, £B, using the formula B = 18 + 0.05t, where £18 is the fixed monthly charge and t is the number of extra text messages sent beyond the free allowance, each charged at 5p. Farida's bill for one month is £24.50. Work out the number of extra text messages, t, she sent.
- 9.Work out the value of 3x² − 4x when x = −2.
- 10.A cafe sells coffees at £c each and pastries at £p each. Three coffees and two pastries cost £9.60. Two coffees and two pastries cost £7.60. Work out the price of one coffee.
- 11.A gas company charges a standing charge plus a rate per unit used. The total cost, y in pounds, for using x units is given by y = 0.15x + 20. Work out the cost of using 200 units.y = 0.15x + 20
- 12.A circle has centre (0, 0) and radius 9. Work out the equation of the circle.
- 13.A circle has centre (0, 0) and equation x² + y² = 8. Work out the radius of the circle, giving your answer as a surd in its simplest form.
- 14.Describe a sequence of two transformations that maps the graph of y = x² onto the graph of y = −(x − 5)².y = x²
- 15.A fundraising chain letter starts with 3 people taking part in round 1. Each following round has 4 times as many people taking part as the round before. Work out the number of people taking part in round 4.
