- 1.A hall is set out in rows of chairs for an assembly. Row 1 has 50 chairs, row 2 has 45 chairs, row 3 has 40 chairs, and row 4 has 35 chairs, with each row after the first having 5 fewer chairs than the one before. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the number of chairs in row n.
- 2.A rope of length L metres is cut into 6 equal pieces, and 4 metres is then removed from one piece. Write an expression, in metres, for the length of that piece after the cut.
- 3.The area of a circle is given by the formula A = πr², where r is the radius. Rearrange the formula to make r the subject.
- 4.The cost, in pounds, of hiring a van for d days is given by the formula C = 25 + 18d. A customer's hire cost £133. Work out how many days, d, they hired the van for, by first rearranging the formula to make d the subject.
- 5.By completing the square, find the turning point of the curve y = 3x² + 12x + 7.y = 3x² + 12x + 7
- 6.Work out the gradient of the straight line with equation 3y = 12 − 6x.
- 7.A ball's height, h metres, t seconds after being thrown follows h = (t − 1)(9 − t). Given that the ball is at ground level at t = 1 and t = 9, work out at what time t the ball reaches its maximum height, using symmetry.
- 8.Solve 6x − 5 = 3x + 13.
- 9.The graph of y = x² − 4x is translated by the vector (3, 0). Work out the equation of the image, giving your answer in the form y = x² + bx + c.y = x² − 4xy = x²
- 10.Solve the simultaneous equations x + y = 1 and 2x + y = 5.
- 11.Write down the expression that means the same as m² × m × 3.
- 12.The point (5, −12) lies on the circle x² + y² = 169, which has centre (0, 0). Work out the equation of the tangent to the circle at (5, −12), giving your answer in the form y = mx + c.
- 13.Work out the value of 2x² when x = −3
- 14.The equation x² − 4x + k = 0 has two different real solutions. Work out the range of values of k.
- 15.f(x) = (x + 1)/2. Find f⁻¹(x).
