- 1.A machine bought for £2,400 loses 12% of its value every year. After how many complete years does its value first fall below £1,500?
- 2.A geometric sequence has first term 4 and common ratio √2. Work out the sum of the first three terms of the sequence, giving your answer in the form a + b√2.
- 3.A rule turns each input x into an output y. The inputs are x = 1, 2, 3, 4 and the matching outputs are y = −5, −3, −1 and one missing value. Work out the missing value of y.
- 4.The iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = √(2xₙ + 15) is used repeatedly, starting from x₀ = 1. Work out the value that xₙ approaches, correct to 2 decimal places.
- 5.The diagram shows two curves drawn on the same grid. Curve A is the graph of . Which equation could represent curve B?
- 6.Expand and simplify (2x − 1)(x + 5)(x − 2). Write down the coefficient of x in your answer.
- 7.x = 5. Work out the value of 3x² − 4.
- 8.A straight line has equation 4y = 12x + 20. Work out the gradient of the line.y = 12x + 20
- 9.A water tank is a cuboid with a square base of side x metres and height (x + 1) metres. Its volume is 10 m³. This gives x³ + x² − 10 = 0, which can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = ∛(10 − xₙ²). Taking x₀ = 2, so that x₁ is the value found after the formula has been used once, work out x₃ correct to 3 decimal places.
- 10.The height, h metres, of a ball t seconds after a stopwatch is started follows h = (t − 1)(5 − t) for 1 ≤ t ≤ 5, where h = 0 means the ball is at ground level. Work out the two times at which the ball is at ground level.
- 11.The graph of y = 20/x is drawn for x > 0. As the value of x increases, what happens to the value of y?
- 12.Solve the inequality x² − 5x + 6 < 0.
- 13.A water butt holds 200 litres and is being drained at a steady 8 litres per minute. Write down the function for the amount of water y, in litres, left after x minutes.
- 14.A speed-time graph for a car shows the speed increasing steadily from 5 m/s to 17 m/s over 6 seconds. Work out the acceleration of the car, in m/s².
- 15.The first four terms of a sequence are 9, 14, 19, 24. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the nth term.
