- 1.A student is asked whether the lines y = (2/5)x − 1 and 5y = −2x + 15 are perpendicular. The student answers: "Yes, because when I rearrange the second equation I get y = −(2/5)x + 3, and 2/5 times −2/5 is negative." Which of these is a correct comment on the student's reasoning?y = -2x + 15
- 2.The graph of y = cos x is transformed onto the graph of y = cos(x − 90°). State the direction of the translation and which standard graph the image is.y = cos(x)
- 3.n = 3. Work out the value of (2n)².
- 4.Solve x² − 100 = 0.
- 5.A plumber charges a call-out fee plus an hourly rate for a job. The total cost, £C, for a job lasting h hours is given by the formula C = 40 + 25h. What does the number 40 represent in this formula?
- 6.x = 5. Work out the value of 3x² − 4.
- 7.A plumber charges a £35 call-out fee plus £20 for each hour worked, h. On a certain job the total charge was £115. Work out how many hours the plumber worked.
- 8.The equation x² − 5x − 2 = 0 can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = √(5xₙ + 2). The starting value is x₀ = 2, so x₁ is the value after the formula has been used once. Work out x₃ correct to 3 decimal places.
- 9.The point (9, 40) lies on the circle x² + y² = 1681, which has centre (0, 0). Work out the equation of the tangent to the circle at (9, 40), giving your answer in the form ax + by = c.
- 10.The table shows the speed, in m/s, of a car at times, in seconds, all 2 seconds apart: 0 at t = 0, 3 at t = 2, 8 at t = 4, 15 at t = 6, 24 at t = 8. A student uses the trapezium rule with these five readings to estimate the distance the car travels. By finding the second differences of the speed values, decide whether this trapezium estimate is an overestimate or an underestimate of the true distance.
- 11.f(x) = 2x − 1. Work out ff(x).y = 2x − 1
- 12.Solve 2x² − 32 = 0.
- 13.Yusuf has £40 saved and adds £6 each week. His sister Aisha has £10 saved and adds £11 each week. After how many weeks will they have saved the same amount?
- 14.The point (4, 2) lies on the circle x² + y² = 20. Work out the equation of the tangent to the circle at (4, 2).
- 15.A point has coordinates (x, y). In which two quadrants is the product x × y positive?
