- 1.The formula for the area of a trapezium is A = (a + b)h / 2, where a and b are the parallel side lengths and h is the height. Make h the subject of the formula.
- 2.A rule turns each input x into an output y. An input of 1 gives an output of 1, an input of 2 gives an output of 4 and an input of 3 gives an output of 9. Work out the rule.
- 3.A rectangular photo has length (x + 3) cm and width x cm. Its area is 40 cm². Work out the value of x.
- 4.The first five terms of a quadratic sequence are −1, 4, 13, 26, 43. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the nth term.
- 5.A speed-time graph for a car shows the speed increasing steadily from 5 m/s to 17 m/s over 6 seconds. Work out the acceleration of the car, in m/s².
- 6.A graph shows the total monthly cost of a mobile phone tariff against the number of minutes of calls. The line starts at £12 and stays level until 200 minutes, then rises by 5p for each further minute of calls. Use the graph to work out the total cost of a month in which 250 minutes of calls are made.
- 7.By completing the square, find the turning point of the curve y = x² + 6x + 2.y = x² + 6x + 2
- 8.A line has equation y = −4x + 1. Work out the equation of the line perpendicular to it that passes through the point (0, 3).y = -4x + 1
- 9.Describe a sequence of two transformations that maps the graph of y = cos x onto the graph of y = cos(x + 90°) − 2.y = cos(x)
- 10.The expression 6n + 15 is written as 3(2n + 5). Which statement is correct?
- 11.A candidate solves the simultaneous equations y = x − 2 and y = x² − 4x + 2 by substitution. They write: "x − 2 = x² − 4x + 2, so x² − 3x + 4 = 0." Which of these is a correct comment on the candidate's working?y = x − 2y = x² − 4x + 2
- 12.Three consecutive integers add up to 72. Using n for the smallest integer, form an equation and solve it to find the smallest of the three integers.
- 13.The equation x² − x − 6 = 0 has roots x = 3 and x = −2. It can be rearranged as xₙ₊₁ = xₙ² − 6. This formula is used with starting value x₀ = 2.9, close to the root x = 3. Work out what happens to the sequence of values as n increases.
- 14.A company charges for hiring chairs for a day. Hiring 1 chair costs £12, hiring 2 chairs costs £19, hiring 3 chairs costs £26, and hiring 4 chairs costs £33. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the cost in pounds of hiring n chairs for a day.
- 15.A taxi company charges a £2.50 booking fee plus £1.80 per mile. A journey costs £15.10 in total. Work out the number of miles travelled.
