- 1.Solve the simultaneous equations x + y = 1 and 2x + y = 5.
- 2.Solve the inequality 9 − 2x ≥ 1.
- 3.Three vertices of a rectangle are (−4, −1), (2, −1) and (2, 3). The sides of the rectangle are parallel to the axes. Write down the coordinates of the fourth vertex.
- 4.A candle is 30 cm tall and burns down at a steady rate of 1 cm per hour. Write down the function for the height of the candle y, in centimetres, after x hours.
- 5.Solve x² + 3x − 10 = 0.
- 6.A triangle has vertices at (1, 1), (1, 5) and (6, 1). Work out the area of the triangle.
- 7.The graph of y = sin x is transformed onto the graph of y = sin x + 1. Which statement correctly describes the transformation and the new range of the graph?y = sin(x)
- 8.The diagram shows the graph of a quadratic function. Which equation could it represent?
- 9.By completing the square, show that the curve y = x² − 14x + 50 never crosses the x-axis. Which statement gives the correct reason?y = x² − 14x + 50
- 10.A straight line passes through the points (2, 7) and (5, 16). Work out the value of y when x = 0.
- 11.A machine bought for £2,400 loses 12% of its value every year. After how many complete years does its value first fall below £1,500?
- 12.The nth term of a sequence is 4n − 3. Work out the 7th term of the sequence.
- 13.A rectangular vegetable plot has an area of 30 m² and its length is 4 m greater than its width, x metres. This gives x² + 4x − 30 = 0, which can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = √(30 − 4xₙ). The starting value is x₀ = 3, so x₁ is the value after the formula has been used once. Work out x₃, and use it to find an estimate for the length of the plot, giving your answer correct to 1 decimal place.
- 14.A quadratic graph y = ax² + bx + c has its turning point on the y-axis. Which statement about its roots must be true?
- 15.A number machine multiplies its input by 3 and then adds 7. The output is 1. Work out the input.
