- 1.The graph of y = f(x) has a root (an x-intercept) at x = 5. Work out the x-coordinate of the corresponding root on the graph of y = f(x + 2).
- 2.Line L has equation y = 3x + 1. Which of these lines is perpendicular to L?y = 3x + 1
- 3.A straight line has gradient −3 and passes through the point (0, 1). Work out the value of y when x = 2.
- 4.Which of these equations represents the graph of y = 2ˣ translated by 3 units in the positive y-direction?
- 5.f(x) = 2x² + 1 and g(x) = x − 1. Work out fg(x), giving your answer in expanded form.y = 2x² + 1
- 6.The graph of y = f(x) has a minimum turning point at (2, −3). The graph of y = −f(x) + a has a maximum turning point at (2, 9). Work out the value of a.
- 7.A ribbon of length L metres is cut into 5 equal pieces, and then 3 metres is removed from one piece. Write down an expression, in metres, for the length of that piece after 3 metres is removed.
- 8.A tap's flow rate, in litres per minute, is plotted against time, in minutes, on a graph. What are the units of the area under this graph?
- 9.The first five terms of a quadratic sequence are 6, 11, 18, 27, 38. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the nth term.
- 10.The graph of P = 480 ÷ V shows how the pressure, P pascals, of a gas depends on its volume, V cm³, at constant temperature. Use the relationship to work out the volume when the pressure is 32 pascals, and then work out by how much the volume increases when the pressure drops to 24 pascals.
- 11.A market trader builds a display of oranges in a rectangular block. The block is n oranges wide and 4 oranges longer than it is wide. The number of oranges needed is 5 when n = 1, 12 when n = 2, 21 when n = 3, 32 when n = 4, and 45 when n = 5. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the number of oranges needed for a display of width n.
- 12.A hiker's distance-time graph shows the following: he walks 5 km in the first 1 hour at a steady speed, rests for 1 hour, then walks a further 9 km in the next 2 hours, also at a steady speed. Work out his average speed for the whole journey, in km/h.
- 13.A taxi charges a £3 fixed fee plus £2 for each mile travelled. Write an expression, in pounds, for the total cost of a journey of n miles.
- 14.The formula connecting distance (d), speed (s) and time (t) is d = st. Make s the subject of the formula.
- 15.Write down the coordinates of the point where the line y = 2x + 4 crosses the y-axis.y = 2x + 4
