- 1.The graph of y = f(x) has roots at x = −1 and x = 4, and crosses the y-axis at (0, −8). Which statement about the graph of y = f(x − 3) is correct?
- 2.Work out the gradient of the straight line that passes through the points (−1, 5) and (3, −7).
- 3.A candle is 30 cm tall and burns down at a steady rate of 1 cm per hour. Write down the function for the height of the candle y, in centimetres, after x hours.
- 4.Solve (3x + 2)/5 = (x + 4)/3
- 5.Solve 4x − (2x − 6) = 18
- 6.A rule turns each input x into an output y. The inputs are x = −1, 0, 1, 2 and the matching outputs are y = 5, 3, 1, −1. Work out the rule.
- 7.Line L has equation y = 3x + 1. Which of these lines is perpendicular to L?y = 3x + 1
- 8.An allotment is in the shape of a rectangle. Its length is 5 m more than its width, x metres, and its area is 20 m². This gives x² + 5x − 20 = 0, which can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = 20 ÷ (xₙ + 5). Taking x₀ = 2, so that x₁ is the value found after the formula has been used once, work out x₂ correct to 2 decimal places.
- 9.Which of these equations is equivalent to 5x − 2 = 3x + 8?
- 10.A line has equation y = −4x + 1. Work out the equation of the line perpendicular to it that passes through the point (0, 3).y = -4x + 1
- 11.Solve x² − 2x − 24 = 0.
- 12.Solve the inequality 3x − 1 ≤ 11.
- 13.A geometric sequence has first term 5, and each term after that is 3 times the term before it. Work out the first term of the sequence that is greater than 1000.
- 14.Which of these values of x is a solution of x² + 2x − 15 = 0?
- 15.Simplify (x² − 9) ÷ (x² + 5x + 6).
