- 1.To rearrange the formula y = 3x − 8 to make x the subject, Priya writes: 'Add 8 to both sides to get y + 8 = 3x, then divide both sides by 3 to get x = y + 8 ÷ 3.' Work out the correct expression for x.y = 3x − 8
- 2.The formula for converting a temperature in Fahrenheit, F, to Celsius, C, is C = 5(F − 32) ÷ 9. Work out C, to 1 decimal place, when F = 98.6.
- 3.The graph of y = f(x) has a maximum turning point at (5, 8). Which of these correctly gives the corresponding turning point on the graph of y = −f(x + 1), and its type?
- 4.A number machine multiplies its input by 3 and then adds 7. The output is 1. Work out the input.
- 5.Solve 2(x + 3) = 10
- 6.Which of these quadratic graphs does NOT cross the x-axis at all?
- 7.Solve the inequality 9 − 2x ≥ 1.
- 8.For the graph of y = 1/x, where x cannot be zero, which of these statements is correct?
- 9.Solve the inequality 3x − 1 ≤ 11.
- 10.The graph of y = f(x) has a minimum turning point at (3, −5), crosses the x-axis at x = 1, and crosses the y-axis at (0, −2). Exactly one of these statements about the graph of y = −f(x + 2) is true. Which statement is true?
- 11.A triangle has vertices at (1, 1), (1, 5) and (6, 1). Work out the area of the triangle.
- 12.Which expression is equivalent to 3(2x − 5) + 4x?
- 13.Four sequences are shown below. Sequence P: 3, 6, 12, 24, … Sequence Q: 1, 4, 9, 16, … Sequence R: 2, 4, 8, 14, … Sequence S: 5, 10, 15, 20, … Work out which of the sequences P, Q, R and S is geometric.
- 14.The graph of P = 480 ÷ V shows how the pressure, P pascals, of a gas depends on its volume, V cm³, at constant temperature. Use the relationship to work out the volume when the pressure is 32 pascals, and then work out by how much the volume increases when the pressure drops to 24 pascals.
- 15.A quadratic graph has roots at x = −3 and x = 5, and it crosses the y-axis at (0, −15). Work out the equation of the curve in the form y = (x − a)(x − b).
