- 1.A quadratic graph has equation y = (x − 4)². A student says this graph crosses the x-axis at two different points. Explain why the student is wrong.
- 2.By completing the square, find the turning point of the curve y = 3x² + 12x + 7.y = 3x² + 12x + 7
- 3.The point (9, 40) lies on the circle x² + y² = 1681, which has centre (0, 0). Work out the equation of the tangent to the circle at (9, 40), giving your answer in the form ax + by = c.
- 4.f(x) = x² − 1 and g(x) = 3x. Work out fg(4).y = x² − 1
- 5.Solve 6x − 5 = 3x + 13.
- 6.Work out the values of x and y that satisfy both x + y = 10 and x − y = 4.
- 7.A sequence begins at 50, and each term after that is found by subtracting 8 from the term before it. Priya says the 8th term of the sequence is negative. Is Priya correct?
- 8.Solve x² + 3x − 10 = 0.
- 9.Four sequences are shown below. Sequence P: 3, 6, 12, 24, … Sequence Q: 1, 4, 9, 16, … Sequence R: 2, 4, 8, 14, … Sequence S: 5, 10, 15, 20, … Work out which of the sequences P, Q, R and S is geometric.
- 10.The trapezium rule is used to estimate the area under a curve between x = 2 and x = 6. The curve is concave up (it curves upwards, like the inside of a bowl) throughout this interval. Which statement about the estimate is correct?
- 11.The equation x² + 2x − 5 = 0 can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = 5/(xₙ + 2). The starting value is x₀ = 1, so x₁ is the value after the formula has been used once. Work out x₂ correct to 2 decimal places.
- 12.Which line of algebra shows that the sum of two consecutive odd numbers is always a multiple of 4?
- 13.Solve the simultaneous equations x + y = 1 and 2x + y = 5.
- 14.A tap fills a tank at a varying rate. A graph shows the rate of flow, in litres per minute, against time, in minutes. What does the area under this graph represent?
- 15.The equation x² − 6x + k = 0 has exactly one solution. Work out the value of k.
