- 1.Work out the integer values of x that satisfy x² − 2x − 8 ≤ 0.
- 2.The discriminant of a quadratic equation is greater than zero. Which statement about the solutions of that equation is correct?
- 3.The graph of y = x² − 2x − 8 takes these values: when x = −2, y = 0; when x = −1, y = −5; when x = 0, y = −8; when x = 3, y = −5; when x = 4, y = 0. Use these values to write down the two solutions of x² − 2x − 8 = 0.y = x² − 2x − 8
- 4.The graph of y = f(x) passes through the point (0, 4). Work out the y-coordinate of the point where the graph of y = f(x) − 6 crosses the y-axis.
- 5.A hall is set out in rows of chairs for an assembly. Row 1 has 50 chairs, row 2 has 45 chairs, row 3 has 40 chairs, and row 4 has 35 chairs, with each row after the first having 5 fewer chairs than the one before. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the number of chairs in row n.
- 6.A geometric sequence has first term 3 and common ratio 2. Work out the 5th term of the sequence.
- 7.A coach company charges a booking fee plus a price for each passenger. A booking for 1 passenger costs £9, for 2 passengers costs £15, for 3 passengers costs £21, and for 4 passengers costs £27. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the cost in pounds of a booking for n passengers.
- 8.A circle has equation x² + y² = 49. Work out the coordinates of the point(s) on the circle where the tangent is horizontal.
- 9.A car's speed increases steadily while it accelerates. Its speed v m/s after t seconds is given by v = u + at, where u is the starting speed in m/s and a is the acceleration in m/s². A car starts at u = 4 m/s and accelerates at a = 2 m/s² until it reaches v = 20 m/s. Work out t, the time taken in seconds.
- 10.A line has equation y = −4x + 1. Work out the equation of the line perpendicular to it that passes through the point (0, 3).y = -4x + 1
- 11.A circle has centre (0, 0) and equation x² + y² = 3721. The point (11, 60) lies on the circle. One of these is the gradient of the tangent to the circle at (11, 60). Work out which one.
- 12.A car accelerates uniformly from rest at 2.5 m/s² until it reaches a speed of 20 m/s, then travels at this constant speed for a further 30 seconds. Work out the total distance travelled.
- 13.A car's velocity–time graph is a straight line from (0 s, 4 m/s) rising to (6 s, V m/s), followed by a straight line falling from (6 s, V m/s) to (9 s, 0 m/s). The gradient of the second line is −8 m/s². Work out the total distance travelled between t = 0 and t = 9 seconds.
- 14.Describe a sequence of two transformations that maps the graph of y = x² onto the graph of y = −(x − 5)².y = x²
- 15.Work out the coordinates of the midpoint of the line segment joining (−3, 5) and (7, 9).
