- 1.Describe the single transformation that maps the graph of y = x² onto the graph of y = x² + 3.y = x²y = x² + 3
- 2.The equation x² − x − 6 = 0 has roots x = 3 and x = −2. It can be rearranged as xₙ₊₁ = xₙ² − 6. This formula is used with starting value x₀ = 2.9, close to the root x = 3. Work out what happens to the sequence of values as n increases.
- 3.Solve the simultaneous equations x + y = 1 and 2x + y = 5.
- 4.Line L has equation y = 2x + 3. Work out the equation of the line perpendicular to L that passes through the point (4, 1), giving your answer in the form x + 2y = c.y = 2x + 3
- 5.Water is poured into a container at a constant rate. A graph of the depth of the water, in cm, against the time since pouring began, in minutes, is a straight line through the origin, and it passes through the point (3, 12). Use the graph to work out the depth of the water after 7 minutes.
- 6.Two brothers have ages that add up to 30. The elder brother is 6 years older than the younger brother. Work out the age of the younger brother.
- 7.The diagram shows a distance–time graph for a cyclist travelling at a constant speed, for the first 6 minutes of a journey. Distance is in kilometres and time is in minutes. Work out how far the cyclist would travel in 20 minutes at the same speed.
- 8.Show that the equation x³ − x − 3 = 0 has a solution between x = 1 and x = 2, by working out f(1) and f(2), where f(x) = x³ − x − 3.y = x
- 9.Tom is asked to classify the statement 5(2x − 3) = 10x − 15. Which statement about it is correct?
- 10.The function f(x) = x² for all real values of x has no inverse function, but g(x) = x² for x ≥ 0 does have one. Which statement correctly explains this?y = x²
- 11.A straight line passes through the points (2, 7) and (5, 16). Work out the value of y when x = 0.
- 12.Work out the coordinates of the midpoint of the line segment joining (−3, 5) and (7, 9).
- 13.f(x) = x + 3 and g(x) = 2x. Work out fg(x).y = x + 3
- 14.The formula for converting a temperature from degrees Celsius, C, to degrees Fahrenheit, F, is F = 1.8C + 32. Work out F when C = 20, and identify what kind of mathematical statement F = 1.8C + 32 is.
- 15.The solution set of a quadratic inequality is {x : x ≤ −3} ∪ {x : x ≥ 5}. Which of these inequalities has this solution set?
