- 1.The tangent to a curve at the point (5, 2) is the line y = mx + c. This tangent crosses the y-axis at (0, −8). Work out the gradient, m, of the tangent.
- 2.A point has coordinates (x, y). In which two quadrants is the product x × y positive?
- 3.A square tile has an area of 144 cm². Work out the side length of the tile.
- 4.A square patio of side length n slabs is surrounded by a single border of square paving slabs of the same size. For a patio with side length n, the total number of slabs used for the patio and its border together is 9 when n = 1, 16 when n = 2, 25 when n = 3, and 36 when n = 4. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the total number of slabs.
- 5.The iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = √(2xₙ + 3) is used repeatedly, starting from x₀ = 1. As n increases, the values of xₙ converge to a limit, L. Work out L.
- 6.The graph of y = sin x is transformed onto the graph of y = sin x + 1. Which statement correctly describes the transformation and the new range of the graph?y = sin(x)
- 7.Solve 2x + 7 = x + 13
- 8.The braking distance of a car, in metres, is estimated using the formula d = 0.4v² + 6, where v is the speed in mph. A car travelling at 35 mph brakes. Work out the estimated braking distance.
- 9.A number machine multiplies its input by 3 and then adds 7. The output is 1. Work out the input.
- 10.By completing the square, find the turning point of the curve y = 2x² − 8x + 3.y = 2x² − 8x + 3
- 11.A student is asked whether 3(x − 4) = 3x − 4 is an identity. Which statement gives the correct verdict and reason?
- 12.A candidate solves the inequality x² > 9 and writes: "x² > 9, so x > 3." Which of these is a correct comment on the candidate's work?
- 13.Simplify (x² − 9) ÷ (x² + 5x + 6).
- 14.A graph has equation y = x² − 6x + 5. A student says its turning point has x-coordinate 6, because that's the coefficient of x. Which statement corrects the student's mistake?y = x² − 6x + 5
- 15.The graph of y = f(x) has a root (an x-intercept) at x = 5. Work out the x-coordinate of the corresponding root on the graph of y = f(x + 2).
