- 1.Which of these is a formula, rather than an expression, an equation, or an identity?
- 2.Line L has equation y = 3x + 1. Which of these lines is perpendicular to L?y = 3x + 1
- 3.The diagram shows the graph of a function. Which equation could it represent?
- 4.The formula connecting distance (d), speed (s) and time (t) is d = st. Make s the subject of the formula.
- 5.The formula for the area of a trapezium is A = (a + b)h / 2, where a and b are the parallel side lengths and h is the height. Make h the subject of the formula.
- 6.Expand and simplify 2(a + 6) − 2(a − 7)
- 7.Using the table of values of f(x) (x = 0, 1, 2, 3 gives f(x) = 5, 8, 4, 1), work out the value of −f(x) when x = 1.
- 8.The first four terms of a sequence are 9, 14, 19, 24. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the nth term.
- 9.Factorise fully 5x + 5y − 5
- 10.The first five terms of a sequence are 7, 9, 13, 19, 27. By finding the second difference, work out the coefficient of n² in the nth term.
- 11.Solve x² − x − 12 = 0.
- 12.The graph of y = x² − 4x is translated by the vector (3, 0). Work out the equation of the image, giving your answer in the form y = x² + bx + c.y = x² − 4xy = x²
- 13.A company's weekly profit, in £, is modelled by y = f(x), where x is the number of weeks since launch. The graph of y = f(x) has a maximum at (10, 45000). A rival company uses the same marketing strategy but starts trading 6 weeks later and has fixed costs £8000 higher every week, so its profit is modelled by y = f(x − 6) − 8000. In which week does the rival's maximum weekly profit occur, and what is it?
- 14.A rope of length L metres is cut into 6 equal pieces, and 4 metres is then removed from one piece. Write an expression, in metres, for the length of that piece after the cut.
- 15.A student is proving that (n + 1)² − n² is always an odd number. Which of these correctly completes the first line of algebra?
