- 1.Tom is asked to classify the statement 5(2x − 3) = 10x − 15. Which statement about it is correct?
- 2.Work out the value of 4p² − 3 when p = 2.5
- 3.The table shows the velocity, in m/s, of a train at various times, in seconds: 0 at t = 0, 20 at t = 4, 35 at t = 10, 27 at t = 14. Assuming the velocity changes at a constant rate between each pair of readings, estimate the distance the train travels between t = 0 and t = 12, using the trapezium rule.
- 4.A hot air balloon is at a height of 20 m and rises at a steady rate. After 4 minutes it is at a height of 52 m. Work out the rate at which the balloon rises, in metres per minute.
- 5.Solve (2x + 1)/3 = 5
- 6.A train's distance-time graph shows it travelling 100 km at a steady speed in the first 1.5 hours, waiting at a signal for 0.25 hours, then travelling a further 47 km in 0.75 hours. Work out the average speed for the whole journey, correct to 1 decimal place.
- 7.Work out the value of 2(x + 2) when x = −5
- 8.Which of these equations is equivalent to 5x − 2 = 3x + 8?
- 9.Solve x² + 7x = 0.
- 10.Work out the coordinates of the reflection of (6, −3) in the y-axis.
- 11.The first four terms of a sequence are 2, 6, 10, 14. Priya says the nth term is 4n. Work out the correct expression for the nth term.
- 12.A rope of length L metres is cut into 6 equal pieces, and 4 metres is then removed from one piece. Write an expression, in metres, for the length of that piece after the cut.
- 13.The diagram shows the graph of the cost, in pounds, of a taxi journey plotted against the distance travelled, in miles, for journeys of up to 4 miles. The same fixed charge and the same cost per mile apply to longer journeys. Work out the cost of a 6-mile journey.
- 14.The numbers x and y satisfy x + y = 10 and xy = 21. Work out the pair of values.
- 15.A speed-time graph shows a constant speed of 15 m/s for 20 seconds. Work out the distance travelled, using the area under the graph.
