- 1.Two students each use the trapezium rule to estimate the area under the same curve between x = 0 and x = 8. Student A uses 4 strips of width 2. Student B uses 8 strips of width 1. Which estimate is more likely to be closer to the true area, and why?
- 2.A quadratic graph has roots at x = −3 and x = 5, and it crosses the y-axis at (0, −15). Work out the equation of the curve in the form y = (x − a)(x − b).
- 3.A square tile has an area of 144 cm². Work out the side length of the tile.
- 4.A rectangular garden has length (x + 7) m and width (x − 7) m. Work out an expression for the area of the garden, giving your answer in its simplest form.
- 5.The first five terms of a quadratic sequence are 6, 11, 18, 27, 38. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the nth term.
- 6.Which of these is a formula, rather than an expression, an equation, or an identity?
- 7.A circle has centre (0, 0) and passes through the point (12, 35). Work out the equation of the circle.
- 8.A graph has equation y = −2x² + 5. Which statement about its shape is correct?y = -2x² + 5
- 9.A regular hexagon has sides of length (x + 2) cm. Write down an expression, in terms of x, for the perimeter of the hexagon.
- 10.A cyclist's speed-time graph is described as follows: speed increases steadily from 0 m/s to 8 m/s over the first 4 seconds, stays constant at 8 m/s for the next 6 seconds, then decreases steadily to 0 m/s over the final 2 seconds. Work out the total distance travelled.
- 11.Two numbers have a sum of 45. The larger number is 9 more than the smaller number. Form an equation using n for the smaller number, and solve it to find the larger number.
- 12.The equation x² − 7 = 0 has a positive root. Let f(x) = x² − 7. Given that x₁ = 2.6 and x₂ = 2.65, work out which of these is correct.y = x² − 7
- 13.The equation x³ − 3x − 4 = 0 has a root near x = 2. Four students each try a different iterative formula, all starting from x₀ = 2: xₙ₊₁ = ∛(3xₙ + 4); xₙ₊₁ = (xₙ³ − 4) ÷ 3; xₙ₊₁ = 4 ÷ (xₙ² − 3); xₙ₊₁ = xₙ³ − 2xₙ − 4. Only one of these formulas keeps producing values that settle near the root when it is repeated. Work out x₁, correct to 3 decimal places, for the formula that does this.
- 14.A sequence has the position-to-term rule n² − 3, where n is the position number. Work out the difference between the 6th term and the 5th term.
- 15.The table shows the speed, in m/s, of a car at times, in seconds, all 2 seconds apart: 0 at t = 0, 3 at t = 2, 8 at t = 4, 15 at t = 6, 24 at t = 8. A student uses the trapezium rule with these five readings to estimate the distance the car travels. By finding the second differences of the speed values, decide whether this trapezium estimate is an overestimate or an underestimate of the true distance.
