- 1.A student is asked whether the lines y = (2/5)x − 1 and 5y = −2x + 15 are perpendicular. The student answers: "Yes, because when I rearrange the second equation I get y = −(2/5)x + 3, and 2/5 times −2/5 is negative." Which of these is a correct comment on the student's reasoning?y = -2x + 15
- 2.The mass of a chemical sample decays by 15% every hour. It starts at 500 g. Work out the mass remaining after 3 hours, correct to 1 decimal place.
- 3.To solve 6x − 4 = 2x + 20, Yusuf's first step is to subtract 2x from both sides. Work out what equation this gives.
- 4.A cinema sells adult tickets for £10 and child tickets for £6. A family group buys 9 tickets in total, spending £74. Work out how many adult tickets were bought.
- 5.Four sequences are shown below. Sequence P: 3, 6, 12, 24, … Sequence Q: 1, 4, 9, 16, … Sequence R: 2, 4, 8, 14, … Sequence S: 5, 10, 15, 20, … Work out which of the sequences P, Q, R and S is geometric.
- 6.Work out the equation of the straight line through the points (−3, 4) and (1, −8).
- 7.A coastguard radar at the origin covers a circular region modelled by x² + y² = 400, where each unit represents 1 kilometre. A boat travels along the straight line that touches the boundary of the region at the point (12, 16). Work out the equation of the line the boat travels along.
- 8.Ben is asked to find the inverse of f(x) = 4 − 3x. He writes f⁻¹(x) = (4 − x)/3. Which statement about Ben's answer is correct?
- 9.The equation x² − 4x − 1 = 0 can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = √(4xₙ + 1). The starting value is x₀ = 1, so x₁ is the value after the formula has been used once. Work out x₂ correct to 3 decimal places.
- 10.f(x) = x³ − 5x − 6. Given that f(2.6) = −1.424 and f(2.7) = 0.183, work out what this shows about the equation x³ − 5x − 6 = 0.y = x
- 11.The equation x³ = 6x + 20 can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = ∛(6xₙ + 20). Taking x₀ = 3, x₁ = 3.3620 correct to 4 decimal places. Using the full unrounded value of x₁, work out x₂ correct to 3 decimal places.
- 12.A number, n, is doubled and then 7 is subtracted. The result is 15. Form an equation and solve it to find n.
- 13.Solve 2(x + 3) = 10
- 14.Explain why the equation 4x + 3 = 4x + 10 has no solution for x.
- 15.A hot air balloon is at a height of 20 m and rises at a steady rate. After 4 minutes it is at a height of 52 m. Work out the rate at which the balloon rises, in metres per minute.
