- 1.Solve 4(x − 3) = 2x + 6.
- 2.The first four terms of a sequence are 4, 9, 14, 19. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the nth term.
- 3.The iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = xₙ³ − 2 is used repeatedly, starting from x₀ = 2. Which of these describes what happens to the sequence of values as n increases?
- 4.A gardener charges a fixed fee of £15 plus £8 for each hour worked. The total charge, £T, for a job lasting h hours is given by T = 15 + 8h. Work out the charge for a job lasting 4 hours, and identify what kind of statement T = 15 + 8h is.
- 5.The nth term of a sequence is n² + 3. Work out the first term of the sequence that is greater than 50.
- 6.A straight line passes through the points (2, 7) and (5, 16). Work out the value of y when x = 0.
- 7.Solve 2x² − 32 = 0.
- 8.Solve x² − 2x − 24 = 0.
- 9.Write down the coefficient of xy in the expression 4x²y − 7xy + 2.
- 10.Which of these equations is equivalent to 5x − 2 = 3x + 8?
- 11.A bacteria colony doubles every 4 hours and its size is recorded only every 4 hours. The recorded population 20 hours after the start is 9,600. After how many hours did the recorded population first exceed 1,000?

- 14.A cyclist's speed rises from rest to a maximum — quickly at first, then more and more slowly — so her speed-time graph is a curve that is concave down (its gradient decreases as time goes on). A trapezium estimate is made for the distance travelled during this phase, using two points on the curve. Is the trapezium estimate an overestimate or an underestimate of the true distance, and why?
- 15.A rectangular garden has length (x + 7) m and width (x − 7) m. Work out an expression for the area of the garden, giving your answer in its simplest form.
