- 1.The tangent to a curve at the point (6, 1) has gradient −3. Work out the y-coordinate of the point where this tangent crosses the y-axis.
- 2.The formula for the perimeter of a rectangle is P = 2(l + w). One rectangle has l = 9 cm and w = 4 cm. A second rectangle has l = 6 cm and w = 5 cm. Work out how many cm greater the perimeter of the first rectangle is than the perimeter of the second.
- 3.The first five terms of a quadratic sequence are −1, 4, 13, 26, 43. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the nth term.
- 4.One solution of the equation x² − (k + 1)x + k = 0 is x = 3. Work out the value of k.
- 5.The first four terms of a sequence are 9, 14, 19, 24. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the nth term.
- 6.Work out the equation of the straight line through the points (−3, 4) and (1, −8).
- 7.The graph of y = f(x) has roots at x = −1 and x = 4, and crosses the y-axis at (0, −8). Which statement about the graph of y = f(x − 3) is correct?
- 8.A rectangular garden has width w metres and length (w + 3) metres. A gardener writes its perimeter as 2w + 3. Which statement corrects the gardener's mistake?
- 9.Write down the expression that means 5 more than half of n.
- 10.The perimeter of a rectangle is given by the formula P = 2(l + w), where l is the length and w is the width. A rectangular garden has a perimeter of 46 m and a length of 14 m. Rearrange the formula to make w the subject, then work out the width of the garden.
- 11.The tangent to a curve at the point (5, 2) is the line y = mx + c. This tangent crosses the y-axis at (0, −8). Work out the gradient, m, of the tangent.
- 12.The first four terms of a sequence are 6, 13, 20, 27. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the nth term.
- 13.Solve the inequality 5x − 3 > 2x + 9.
- 14.The equation x³ − 2x − 7 = 0 has exactly one solution. It can be found using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = ∛(2xₙ + 7), with starting value x₀ = 2, so that x₁ is the value after the formula has been used once. Work out the solution correct to 2 decimal places, iterating until two consecutive values round to the same 2 decimal places.
- 15.The simultaneous equations 2x + 3y = 12 and x − y = 1 are given. Work out the value of y.
