- 1.Solve 2x² = 18.
- 2.Solve 6x − 5 = 3x + 13.
- 3.Solve the inequality 4x + 1 > 2x + 9.
- 4.f(x) = (x + 1)/2. Find f⁻¹(x).
- 5.When a number is added to its square the result is 30. Work out the possible values of the number.
- 6.The graph of y = f(x) has a minimum turning point at (3, −5), crosses the x-axis at x = 1, and crosses the y-axis at (0, −2). Exactly one of these statements about the graph of y = −f(x + 2) is true. Which statement is true?
- 7.In a shop a shirt costs £x and a pair of trousers costs £(2x + 30). Together the two items cost at least £150. Work out the lowest possible price of the shirt.
- 8.Solve 2x + 7 = x + 13
- 9.A rule turns each input x into an output y. The inputs are x = 1, 2, 3, 4 and the matching outputs are y = −5, −3, −1 and one missing value. Work out the missing value of y.
- 10.A straight line has equation y = 4 − 3x. Work out the gradient of the line.
- 11.A walker's distance-time graph is described as follows: she walks 3 km in the first 15 minutes at a steady speed, rests for 10 minutes, then walks a further 3 km in the next 20 minutes, also at a steady speed. Work out her speed, in km/h, during the first 15 minutes.
- 12.By completing the square, find the turning point of the curve y = x² − 10x + 30.y = x² − 10x + 30
- 13.Solve x² − 8x + 3 = 0 by completing the square. Give your answers in surd form.
- 14.A student attempts to prove that the sum of any three consecutive integers is a multiple of 3. Line 1: Let the three consecutive integers be n, n + 1 and n + 2. Line 2: Their sum is n + (n + 1) + (n + 2) = 3n + 2. Line 3: 3n + 2 leaves a remainder of 2 when divided by 3, so it is not a multiple of 3. Line 4: So the sum of three consecutive integers is not always a multiple of 3. Which line contains the FIRST error?
- 15.The solution set of a quadratic inequality is {x : x ≤ −3} ∪ {x : x ≥ 5}. Which of these inequalities has this solution set?
