- 1.A ship leaves port P and sails 24 km on a bearing of 040° to a buoy Q. It then sails 31 km on a bearing of 115° to a lighthouse R. Work out the direct distance from P to R. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 2.The angle between north and a cycle path is 40°, but it is measured anticlockwise from north. What is the three-figure bearing of the cycle path?
- 3.A triangular plot of land ABC is to be covered with turf. AB = 23.5 m, AC = 17.2 m and angle BAC = 108°. Turf costs £4.25 per square metre. Work out the cost of the turf for the plot. Give your answer to the nearest pound.
- 4.Two coastguard stations A and B are 18 km apart, with B due east of A. A boat at C is on a bearing of 062° from A and on a bearing of 315° from B. Work out the distance of the boat from station B. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 5.In triangle ABC, AB = 11 cm, AC = 9 cm and the area of the triangle is 45 cm². Given that angle BAC is obtuse, work out the size of angle BAC. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 6.A circular tabletop has a radius of 15 cm. Work out the area of the tabletop. Use π = 3.14. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 7.A plan of a school hall uses a scale of 1 : 250. A wall is drawn 3.4 cm long on the plan. Sam wants to know the wall's real length in metres. What is it?
- 8.Two similar signs have lengths in the ratio 9 : 4. The larger sign has a side of length 14.4 cm. Work out the length of the corresponding side of the smaller sign.
- 9.A water tank is a cube with edges of length 2 m. Work out how many cubic centimetres the tank holds when it is full.
- 10.A bead starts at position (2, −1) on a grid, in centimetres. It is moved by the column vector u, with top number 3 and bottom number 5, and then moved by the column vector v, with top number −7 and bottom number 2. Work out the coordinates of the bead's final position.
- 11.In triangle ABC, AB = 6.4 cm, BC = 9.1 cm and AC = 12.8 cm. Work out the size of the largest angle in the triangle. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 12.A regular octagonal tabletop has centre O. Each vertex is 30 cm from O. Work out the area of the tabletop. Give your answer to the nearest square centimetre.
- 13.A shop stacks identical storage crates in a display. The diagram shows the plan of the floor positions used, with one corner position marked. Every floor position is filled with crates stacked 3 high, except the marked corner position, which is left completely empty. Work out how many crates are used in total.
- 14.A stage designer is building a triangular platform ABC for a school play. AB = 11.5 m, AC = 8.2 m and angle BAC = 72°, the angle between them. The flooring for the platform costs £15.80 per square metre. Work out the total cost of the flooring, to the nearest pound.
