- 1.Triangle ABC has a right angle at B, hypotenuse AC = 13 cm and AB = 5 cm. Triangle DEF has a right angle at E, hypotenuse DF = 13 cm and DE = 5 cm. Which condition proves the two triangles are congruent?
- 2.In triangle ABC, AB = 9 cm, AC = 6 cm and angle BAC = 110°. Work out the length of BC. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 3.A, B and C are points on a circle with centre O, and AB is a diameter. Prove that angle ACB = 90°, using the fact that triangle OAC and triangle OBC are both isosceles. In the proof, angle OAC = angle OCA = x and angle OBC = angle OCB = y. Which equation correctly expresses the angle sum of triangle ABC in terms of x and y, and leads to the required proof?
- 4.A television cable runs in a straight line from the edge of a flat roof 20 m above the ground to a bracket on a wall 5 m above the ground. The horizontal distance between the roof edge and the bracket is 15 m. Work out the length of the cable. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 5.A stained-glass window panel is designed as a kite. Two adjacent sides are each 25 cm, and the other two adjacent sides are each 40 cm. A frame is fitted around the whole panel. The frame costs £2.50 per metre, sold only in whole metres. Work out the total cost of the frame.
- 6.The top of a clock tower is 25 m above level ground. Oliver stands on the ground 25 m from the foot of the tower. Work out the angle of elevation of the top of the tower from the point where Oliver stands.
- 7.Two hikers walk from a campsite A to a lookout B, a distance of 14 km on a bearing of 038°. From B they walk to a shelter C, a distance of 20 km on a bearing of 142°. Work out the direct distance from A to C. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 8.Triangle D has vertices (3, 1), (3, 5) and (6, 1). It is reflected in the line x = 3. Write down the number of vertices of the triangle that are invariant under this reflection.
- 9.A solid pyramid has a square base of side 10 cm and four identical triangular faces. Its apex is directly above the centre of the base, at a vertical height of 12 cm, and the slant height of each triangular face — the distance from the apex to the midpoint of a base edge — is 13 cm. Work out the total surface area of the pyramid.
- 10.A roof has two triangular sections, P and Q. Section P has a sloping edge of 3.6 m and a base edge of 2.4 m, with an angle of 70° between them. Section Q has a sloping edge of 3.6 m and a base edge of 2.4 m, with an angle of 70° between them, arranged the same way round. A roofer wants to cut identical triangular felt panels for both sections without measuring Section Q separately. Which condition confirms that the two sections are congruent?
- 11.A pop-up canopy has two sloping supports that meet at the top. Each support makes an angle of 30° with the ground and is 6 m long. Using the exact value of cos 30°, work out the total width of the canopy's base.
- 12.In a kite, one pair of opposite angles are equal in size. In kite WXYZ, angle X = 40° and angle Z = 100° are the two angles that are NOT equal to each other. The other two angles, W and Y, are equal to each other. Work out the size of angle W.
- 13.Lines JK and LM are parallel. A straight line crosses JK at point P and crosses LM at point Q. Angle KPQ = 118°. Angle KPQ and angle MQP are co-interior (allied) angles. Work out angle MQP.
- 14.A right-angled triangle has a hypotenuse of 10 cm and one of its other angles is 45°. Work out the length of one of the two shorter sides. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 15.A market stall sells apples at £2.40 per kilogram. Which of these expressions gives the cost, in pounds, of buying m kilograms of apples?
