- 1.A carpenter cuts two triangular metal brackets for a shelf. Bracket P has sides of 12 cm, 16 cm and 20 cm. Bracket Q has sides of 16 cm, 20 cm and 12 cm, listed in a different order. Before fitting them as a matching pair, the carpenter wants to check they are exactly the same shape and size. Which of the following correctly justifies this?
- 2.A circle has a radius of 1 cm. Work out the circumference of the circle. Give your answer in terms of π.
- 3.A cable supporting a flagpole is anchored to the ground 5 m from the base of the pole. The cable makes an angle of 60° with the ground. Using the exact value of tan 60°, work out the exact height of the flagpole.
- 4.In triangle ABC, AB = 9 cm, angle BAC = 50° and the area of the triangle is 36 cm². Work out the length of AC. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 5.Triangle A has vertices (2, 1), (5, 1) and (2, 4). It is translated by the vector (−3, 2) and the image is then reflected in the x-axis. Work out the coordinates of the image of (5, 1).
- 6.A cuboid measures 5 cm long (left to right), 3 cm deep (front to back) and 2 cm tall. Its front elevation is 5 cm wide by 2 cm high. Its side elevation is 3 cm wide by 2 cm high. What are the dimensions of its plan view, looking down from above?
- 7.A construction for the perpendicular bisector of AB begins by opening a pair of compasses to more than half the length of AB, then drawing an arc centred at A. What is the next step?
- 8.In triangle ABC, AB = 9.4 cm, AC = 7.2 cm and angle BAC = 63°, the angle between them. Work out the area of triangle ABC. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 9.A student is asked to rearrange the cosine rule a² = b² + c² − 2bc cos A to make cos A the subject. They write: cos A = (a² − b² − c²) / (2bc). Is the student's rearrangement correct?
- 10.A point is translated twice by the vector . Write down the single column vector that describes the overall translation.
- 11.Triangle T has an area of 6 cm². It is enlarged by scale factor −2 about the origin, and the image is then rotated 90° about the origin. Work out the area of the final image, and state whether it is the same way round as T or a mirror image of it.
- 12.A regular polygon has an interior angle of 156°. Work out the number of sides of the polygon.
- 13.A scale model of a bridge is built so that 2 cm on the model represents 5 m of the real bridge. The real bridge is 45 m long. Work out the length of the model bridge, in centimetres.
- 14.A garden water trough is a prism whose cross-section is a right-angled triangle with base 40 cm and height 30 cm. The trough is 120 cm long. Work out the volume of water needed to fill the trough completely.
- 15.In kite WXYZ, WX = WZ and XY = ZY (so at each of X and Z, one side from each of the two unequal pairs meets). Angle X = 100°. Work out angle Z.
