- 1.Work out (4 × 10³) × (3 × 10¹). Give your answer in standard form.
- 2.A recipe uses 0.625 kg of flour. Write this mass as a fraction of a kilogram, in its simplest form.
- 3.A market trader buys 8 melons at £1.35 each. He sells all of them for a total of £15.60. Work out his profit.

- 5.A plumber charges a call-out fee of £45 and then £28 for each hour she works. She is at a house from 09:15 until 12:45. Work out the total charge.
- 6.Work out (5 × 10⁴) ÷ (2 × 10⁻²). Give your answer in standard form.
- 7.Two-digit numbers are made using the digits 1, 2, 3 and 4, and no digit may be used twice in the same number. Work out how many different two-digit numbers can be made.
- 8.A plane flies 2340 km at an average speed of 780 km/h. It departs at 08:20. Work out the arrival time, using the 24-hour clock.
- 9.Petrol costs £1.48 per litre. Sam buys 35 litres and pays with three £20 notes. Work out his change.
- 10.A quantity surveyor calculates a length as 24.6851 m. Round this length to 2 decimal places.
- 11.Given that 2⁵ = 32, work out 2⁶.
- 12.The distance from the Earth to the Moon is 384,000 km. Write this distance in standard form, in kilometres.
- 13.A charity trek covers 830 miles over roughly 19 days. By rounding each number to 1 significant figure, work out an estimate for the number of miles walked per day.
- 14.In a science experiment, the temperature of a liquid is recorded as 18.6 °C, correct to the nearest 0.2 °C. Write down the error interval for the actual temperature, T °C.
- 15.A tap fills a 20 litre bucket in 2 minutes 30 seconds. Work out the rate of flow, in litres per minute.
