- 1.Work out 100 − 4 × 5²
- 2.Work out (2 × 10³) × (3 × 10⁴). Give your answer in standard form.
- 3.A plane flies 2340 km at an average speed of 780 km/h. It departs at 08:20. Work out the arrival time, using the 24-hour clock.
- 4.In a box of chocolates 5/8 are milk chocolates and the rest are dark chocolates. Work out the number of dark chocolates as a fraction of the number of milk chocolates.
- 5.The diameter of an artificial silk fibre is 4 × 10⁻⁶ metres. One nanometre is 10⁻⁹ metres. Work out the diameter of the fibre in nanometres.
- 6.A weather app records the temperature at three points in one day: 6 °C at noon, −2 °C at midnight, and −7 °C just before dawn. Work out the difference between the highest and lowest of these three temperatures.
- 7.p = 24 and q = 6, each correct to the nearest integer. Work out the greatest degree of accuracy to which p ÷ q can be guaranteed correct.

- 10.A school council must choose a committee of 3 pupils from 8 volunteers. The three places on the committee are all the same, so only which pupils are chosen matters. Work out how many different committees could be formed.
- 11.A jacket normally costs £65. In a sale it is reduced by 20%, and the shop then takes a further £5 off at the till. Work out the final price.
- 12.A cyclist rides at a steady speed of 8 metres per second. Work out this speed in kilometres per hour.
- 13.After a price increase of 10%, a laptop costs £330. Work out the original price.
- 14.Which of these decimals lies between 1/4 and 2/5?
- 15.Write 0.875 as a fraction in its simplest form.
