- 1.A red blood cell has a diameter of about 7 × 10⁻⁶ metres. A virus has a diameter about 100 times smaller. Work out the diameter of the virus. Give your answer in standard form.
- 2.Round 0.006482 to 2 significant figures.
- 3.Work out (6 × 10⁷) + (3 × 10⁶). Give your answer in standard form.
- 4.Bella's electricity supplier charges 28.5p per unit (kWh). Last month she used 340 units. Work out the total cost, giving your answer in pounds.
- 5.A country's population is 8,340,000, and it is estimated that 1,950,000 of them live in the capital city. By rounding each number to 1 significant figure, work out an estimate for the number of people who do not live in the capital city.
- 6.A number, y, is equal to 8.2 when rounded to 1 decimal place. Write down the error interval for y.
- 7.A gym increases its membership price by 1/5. The original price is £60. Work out the new price.
- 8.A car travels 180 km using 6 litres of fuel. Work out the car's fuel consumption in kilometres per litre, then work out how many kilometres it can travel on a full tank of 12 litres at this rate.
- 9.Work out (3 × 10²) × (2 × 10⁵). Give your answer in standard form.
- 10.A train journey takes 45 minutes, correct to the nearest 5 minutes. Using t for the actual time of the journey in minutes, write down the error interval for t.
- 11.Five different books are placed in a row on a shelf. Work out how many different orders the five books can be placed in.
- 12.Write these fractions in order, starting with the smallest: 2/3, 3/5, 5/6, 1/2
- 13.A cinema has 250 seats. 12% of the seats are reserved. Work out how many of the seats are reserved.
