- 1.Work out (−36) ÷ (−6) × 2
- 2.Estimate the value of √45, giving your answer to the nearest whole number.
- 3.Rationalise the denominator of 6/√3, giving your answer in its simplest form.
- 4.Two lighthouses flash at the start of the same minute. The first lighthouse flashes every 8 minutes and the second flashes every 12 minutes. Work out how many minutes it will be until they next flash together.
- 5.A semicircle has a diameter of 8 cm. Work out the exact area of the semicircle, in terms of π.
- 6.Work out (3 × 10²) × (2 × 10⁵). Give your answer in standard form.
- 7.A box stands on a table. The box exerts a force of 240 N on the table, and the base of the box has an area of 0.8 m². Work out the pressure the box exerts on the table, in N/m².
- 8.A shortbread recipe uses flour and butter in the ratio 5 : 2. Yuki changes the recipe by doubling the amount of butter but keeping the amount of flour the same. Work out the fraction of the new mixture that is butter.
- 9.A weather app records the temperature at three points in one day: 6 °C at noon, −2 °C at midnight, and −7 °C just before dawn. Work out the difference between the highest and lowest of these three temperatures.
- 10.A photograph uses 4 × 10⁶ bytes of storage. A memory card holds 3.2 × 10¹⁰ bytes. Work out how many of these photographs the card can hold. Give your answer in standard form.
- 11.Without using a calculator, estimate √20 × √12, giving your answer to the nearest whole number.
- 12.A number, x, is truncated (not rounded) to 1 decimal place and the result is 6.2. Write down the error interval for x.
- 13.A recipe uses 160 g of flour. Sam wants to increase the amount by 1/4. Work out the new amount of flour.
- 14.Find the missing number: ▢ ÷ 15 = 24
- 15.An allotment plot is divided into vegetables and flowers in the ratio 9 : 4. A third of the vegetable section is used for potatoes. What fraction of the whole plot is potatoes?
