- 1.Work out ∛(−27) + ∛8
- 2.Put these numbers in order, starting with the smallest: 3.2 × 10⁴, 2.9 × 10⁵, 4.1 × 10³
- 3.Work out an estimate for 2.9² + 3.1², by rounding each number to the nearest whole number.
- 4.A cake recipe needs 3/4 of a kilogram of sugar. Aisha wants to make half the recipe. Work out how much sugar she needs, giving your answer as a fraction of a kilogram in its simplest form.
- 5.A shortbread recipe uses flour and butter in the ratio 5 : 2. Yuki changes the recipe by doubling the amount of butter but keeping the amount of flour the same. Work out the fraction of the new mixture that is butter.
- 6.Maya buys 4 plants at £3.20 each and a bag of compost for £6.75. She pays with a £20 note. Work out her change.
- 7.Work out 1 1/2 ÷ 3/4 exactly, giving your answer in its simplest form.

- 9.The number 72 can be written as 2³ × 3², and the number 108 can be written as 2² × 3³. Work out the highest common factor of 72 and 108.
- 10.The distance from the Earth to the Moon is 384,000 km. Write this distance in standard form, in kilometres.
- 11.A jug holds 3 1/3 litres of juice. Each glass holds 2/3 of a litre. Work out how many glasses can be filled from the jug.
- 12.A market trader buys 8 melons at £1.35 each. He sells all of them for a total of £15.60. Work out his profit.
- 13.Work out 3 1/5 + 1 2/3. Give your answer as a mixed number in its simplest form.
- 14.c = 50, correct to the nearest 10. d = 18, correct to the nearest whole number. Work out the upper bound of c − d.
- 15.A number, x, is truncated (not rounded) to 1 decimal place and the result is 6.2. Write down the error interval for x.
