- 1.A box stands on a table. The box exerts a force of 240 N on the table, and the base of the box has an area of 0.8 m². Work out the pressure the box exerts on the table, in N/m².
- 2.A car travels 100 km, correct to the nearest km, in a time of 2 hours, correct to the nearest 0.1 hour. Work out the average speed, in km/h, to the greatest degree of accuracy the bounds can guarantee.
- 3.Write 5,000,000 in standard form.
- 4.Work out 100 − 4 × 5²
- 5.A roll of ribbon is 8.4 m long. Ribbon is cut into pieces that are each 0.6 m long. Work out how many complete pieces can be cut from the roll.
- 6.Work out (2 × 10³) × (3 × 10⁴). Give your answer in standard form.
- 7.Round 0.006852 to 2 significant figures.
- 8.A student writes 0.08 as the fraction 8/10, reading the 8 as if it stood in the tenths column and ignoring the zero. Work out the correct fraction that 0.08 is equal to, giving your answer in its simplest form.
- 9.Work out (6 × 10⁷) + (3 × 10⁶). Give your answer in standard form.
- 10.A plumber charges a call-out fee of £45 and then £28 for each hour she works. She is at a house from 09:15 until 12:45. Work out the total charge.

- 12.The population of a planet is 8 × 10⁹. Write this population as an ordinary number.
- 13.Write 60 as a product of its prime factors, using index notation.
- 14.Work out ∛(−27) + ∛8
- 15.The diameter of an artificial silk fibre is 4 × 10⁻⁶ metres. One nanometre is 10⁻⁹ metres. Work out the diameter of the fibre in nanometres.
