- 1.A lift has a safe working load of 500 kg. Four people get in the lift and the lift's display records their total mass as 493 kg, correct to the nearest kg. Decide whether the four people are definitely within the safe working load.
- 2.Write 5,000,000 in standard form.
- 3.Simplify x⁵ × x³ ÷ x², giving your answer as a single power of x.
- 4.A café is planning its lunch menu. It will offer one soup from 3 choices and one sandwich from 4 choices, but the mushroom soup, one of the 3 soups, will only be served with the cheese sandwich, one of the 4 sandwiches, on a normal day. Work out how many different soup-and-sandwich combinations are available on a normal day.
- 5.Work out (−2/5) × (−10/3). Give your answer as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 6.Work out 35% of 180.
- 7.Without using a calculator, estimate √20 × √12, giving your answer to the nearest whole number.
- 8.A necklace is made from red beads and gold beads in the ratio 7 : 3. What fraction of the beads are gold?
- 9.Three-digit numbers are made using the digits 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 9. No digit may be used twice in the same number. Work out how many of these three-digit numbers are odd.
- 10.Leah measures the length of her classroom with a tape measure marked in centimetres. She writes the length down as 7.3157 m. Give a reason why this is not an appropriate degree of accuracy.
- 11.p = 24 and q = 6, each correct to the nearest integer. Work out the greatest degree of accuracy to which p ÷ q can be guaranteed correct.
- 12.A triangle has a base of 8 cm and a perpendicular height of 5 cm, each correct to the nearest centimetre. Work out the upper bound of the area.
- 13.A school orders 187 packed lunches for a trip. Each packed lunch costs £4.85. The school has £900 to spend. By rounding each number to 1 significant figure, work out an estimate for the total cost and decide whether £900 is enough.
- 14.A car is hired from 10:00 on Monday until 16:00 on Thursday. Work out the total length of the hire, in hours.
- 15.A recipe uses 0.625 kg of flour. Write this mass as a fraction of a kilogram, in its simplest form.
