- 1.A spreadsheet shows that 812 − 397 = 315. Work out an estimate for 812 − 397, by rounding each number to the nearest 100, to check whether the spreadsheet's answer is reasonable.
- 2.A jacket normally costs £65. In a sale it is reduced by 20%, and the shop then takes a further £5 off at the till. Work out the final price.
- 3.Work out the value of 2⁻²
- 4.The number 72 can be written as 2³ × 3², and the number 108 can be written as 2² × 3³. Work out the highest common factor of 72 and 108.
- 5.The number 36 can be written as 2² × 3², and the number 84 can be written as 2² × 3 × 7. Work out the highest common factor of 36 and 84.
- 6.Jack buys 3 books, each costing £4.25, and pays with a £20 note. Work out how much change he receives.

- 9.A space probe is 7.5 × 10⁸ km from Earth. Write this distance as an ordinary number.
- 10.Write 0.325 as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 11.Given that 2⁵ = 32, work out 2⁶.
- 12.Write down the symbol that makes this statement true: −2/3 ___ −5/6
- 13.A concrete mix is made from cement and sand in the ratio 3 : 5 by mass. A builder mixes 96 kg of concrete. Work out the mass of cement in the mix.
- 14.The diameter of an artificial silk fibre is 4 × 10⁻⁶ metres. One nanometre is 10⁻⁹ metres. Work out the diameter of the fibre in nanometres.
- 15.A red blood cell has a diameter of about 7 × 10⁻⁶ metres. A virus has a diameter about 100 times smaller. Work out the diameter of the virus. Give your answer in standard form.
