- 1.A bag contains beads that are exactly one of red, white or black. The probability of taking a red bead is 3/10 and the probability of taking a white bead is 1/4. Work out the probability of taking a bead that is red or white.
- 2.A fair six-sided dice is rolled 300 times. Work out how many more times you would expect it to land on an even number than on a six.
- 3.An archer hits the bullseye with probability 0.24 on any one shot. She wants to know how many shots she must take to expect to hit the bullseye 12 times. Work out how many shots this is.
- 4.Two ordinary fair dice are rolled and the two scores are multiplied together. Work out the probability that the product is odd.
- 5.150 people at a gym were asked whether they prefer weight training or cardio; each person chose exactly one. 84 of the people are women. 50 of the women prefer cardio. 40 of the men prefer weight training. Work out the probability that a person, chosen at random from the 150, prefers weight training. Give your answer as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 6.A raffle sells 400 tickets at 50p each. There is one prize of £45. Aisha buys 8 tickets. Work out how much money Aisha should expect to lose from playing, giving your answer in pounds.
- 7.A fair coin is flipped again and again. After the first 10 flips there have been 7 heads. After 1000 flips there have been 528 heads. Which statement best describes what these results show?
- 8.Dice A is a fair six-sided dice. Dice B is biased so that P(6) = 0.3. Dice A is rolled 150 times and Dice B is rolled 150 times. Work out how many more sixes you would expect from Dice B than from Dice A.
- 9.At a fun run, each runner finishes, retires or is disqualified, and cannot do more than one of these. The probability that a runner finishes is 68.5% and the probability that a runner retires is 24.75%. Work out the probability, as a percentage, that a runner is disqualified.
- 10.An ordinary six-sided dice, numbered 1 to 6, is rolled 30 times and lands on a 6 seven times. Ravi says the theoretical probability of rolling a 6 and the relative frequency of rolling a 6 in this trial are the same number. Is Ravi right?
- 11.A four-colour spinner (red, blue, green, yellow) is spun repeatedly, and the relative frequency of landing on green is recorded as the number of spins increases: after 20 spins it is 0.350; after 200 spins it is 0.290; after 2000 spins it is 0.251. Using the result from 2000 spins as the best estimate of the probability, work out the number of times the spinner would be expected to land on green in a further 3000 spins.
- 12.A game uses a fair spinner with 5 equal sections numbered 1 to 5. A player wins £12 if the spinner lands on 5, and wins nothing otherwise. It costs £2 to play. The game is played 250 times. Work out the expected profit for the players, in total, over the 250 games.
- 13.A weather station records whether it rains each day for 40 days: it rains on 9 of the days and does not rain on the rest. A local forecaster claims that the probability of rain on any day is 0.3. Work out the relative frequency of rain from the recorded data.
- 14.In a survey of 200 households, 120 have a garden and 80 own a dog. 54 of the households have a garden and own a dog. Work out the probability that a household owns a dog given that it has a garden, and compare it with the probability that a household picked from the whole survey owns a dog.
- 15.A frequency tree records the results of 160 patients who took a new medicine. It splits them into those who reported side effects and those who did not. 15% of the patients reported side effects. Work out how many of the 160 patients did not report side effects.
