- 1.At a fun run, a raffle stall charges £1.50 per ticket. The probability that any one ticket wins a prize worth £8 is 0.12, and a losing ticket wins nothing. Nadia buys 25 tickets. Work out how much money Nadia should expect to lose in total.
- 2.A machine produces bolts. In a sample of 250 bolts, 15 are faulty. Work out the relative frequency of a bolt being faulty, giving your answer as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 3.A fair six-sided dice is rolled 300 times. Work out how many more times you would expect it to land on an even number than on a six.
- 4.Harry plays a game in which he flips a fair coin and rolls an ordinary fair dice. He wins a prize only if the coin shows heads and the dice shows a 6. Work out the probability that Harry wins a prize.
- 5.A call centre finds that 40% of its calls are about billing. 35% of the calls about billing are dealt with in under five minutes. The centre takes 500 calls on Monday. Work out how many of Monday's calls you would expect to be about billing and dealt with in under five minutes.
- 6.A drawer contains 9 black socks and 4 white socks. Three socks are taken out at random, one after another, without being replaced. Given that at least two of the three socks taken out are black, work out the probability that all three are black.
- 7.A charity tombola has 30 tickets, 6 of which win a prize. Priya buys a ticket at random and does not return it. Her friend Tom then buys a second ticket at random from the remaining tickets. Work out the probability that both Priya and Tom win a prize.
- 8.On the probability scale from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain), evens is exactly halfway. An event is 3/10 more likely than evens. Work out the probability of that event, giving your answer as a decimal.
- 9.A pack contains 6 cards, numbered 1 to 6. A card is drawn at random from the pack, and a fair coin is flipped. Work out the probability of drawing an even-numbered card and the coin landing on tails.
- 10.An ordinary fair dice is rolled once. Set A is the set of even scores and set B is the set of scores greater than 4. Work out the probability that the score rolled is in set A or in set B or in both.
- 11.A biased spinner is spun 40 times and lands on red 16 times. It is then spun a further 60 times and lands on red 21 times. Work out the best estimate of the probability that the spinner lands on red, using the results of all 100 spins together.
- 12.A bag contains beads that are exactly one of red, white or black. The probability of taking a red bead is 3/10 and the probability of taking a white bead is 1/4. Work out the probability of taking a bead that is red or white.
- 13.A survey of 160 employees at a company recorded whether they cycle to work, using a frequency tree. The first branch splits them into 90 who work full-time and 70 who work part-time. Of the full-time employees, 27 cycle to work. Of the part-time employees, 14 cycle to work. Work out the probability that an employee, chosen at random from the 160, cycles to work. Give your answer as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 14.A survey of 60 readers records: 21 read only fiction, 17 read only non-fiction, 14 read both, and the rest read neither. Work out the probability that a randomly chosen reader reads exactly one of the two types, giving your answer as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 15.Oliver flips three fair coins at the same time. Work out the probability that exactly two of the three coins land on heads.
