- 1.The midday temperature in Leeds was recorded on each day of one week: 22 °C, 24 °C, 23 °C, 25 °C, 26 °C, 21 °C, 24 °C. Work out the mean midday temperature, giving your answer to 2 decimal places.
- 2.A quality inspector weighs a random sample of 50 packets of crisps from one day's production and finds their mean mass is 32.4 g. The factory makes 20,000 packets that day. Work out an estimate for the total mass, in kg, of all the packets made that day.
- 3.The mean of three numbers is 50. A fourth number, 100, is added to the set. Work out the mean of the four numbers.
- 4.A histogram shows the ages, in years, of 250 members of a running club. The bar for the class 10 ≤ age < 20 has a frequency density of 4.5 members per year, the bar for 20 ≤ age < 35 has a frequency density of 6 members per year, and the bar for 50 ≤ age < 70 has a frequency density of 2.75 members per year. Work out the frequency of the remaining class, 35 ≤ age < 50.
- 5.A cumulative frequency graph for the diameters, d mm, of 320 ball bearings is plotted from these points (upper class boundary, cumulative frequency): (10, 30), (20, 90), (30, 190), (40, 280), (50, 320). Estimate the diameter below which 90% of the ball bearings measure.
- 6.A two-way table records the favourite subject, Maths or Art, of 60 pupils in Year 10, and whether each pupil is left-handed or right-handed. 9 of the 60 pupils are left-handed, and 6 of those left-handed pupils prefer Art. In total, 24 of the 60 pupils prefer Art. A pupil is chosen at random from the 60. Work out the probability that the pupil is right-handed and prefers Art.
- 7.A sports centre in Ipswich has 2,000 members. It wants to know what its members think of its opening hours, so it asks a random sample of 100 of them. Write down what the population is in this survey.
- 8.A council in Leeds wants to know what local people think about letting shops stay open later in the evening. It rings landline telephone numbers between 10 am and 2 pm on a Tuesday. Write down which group is most likely to be under-represented in the sample, and give a reason for your answer.
- 9.The masses, m kg, of 60 parcels are grouped like this: 0 ≤ m < 5, 22 parcels; 5 ≤ m < 10, 20 parcels; 10 ≤ m < 20, 9 parcels; 20 ≤ m < 30, 5 parcels; 30 ≤ m < 50, 4 parcels. Write down the class interval that contains the median mass.
- 10.A two-way table records whether each of 40 people at a gym in Sheffield prefers weights or cardio, and whether they are male or female. 24 of the 40 people are female. 15 of the males prefer cardio. 10 of the females prefer weights. Work out the total number of people who prefer cardio.
- 11.In a histogram of the lengths, x cm, of some rods, the bar for 10 ≤ x < 30 has a frequency density of 3 per cm. The bar for 30 ≤ x < 45 is twice as tall as the bar for 10 ≤ x < 30. Work out the number of rods with a length in the class 30 ≤ x < 45.
- 12.The daily high temperatures, in °C, in Leeds over five days were 14, 16, 18, 19 and 23. In York over the same five days they were 15, 17, 17, 18 and 18. Write a sentence comparing Leeds and York using both the median and the range.
- 13.A histogram shows the times, t minutes, taken by 120 visitors to complete an escape room. The bar for 0 ≤ t < 10 has a frequency density of 5 visitors per minute, the bar for 10 ≤ t < 20 has a frequency density of 2 visitors per minute, the bar for 20 ≤ t < 40 has a frequency density of 1.5 visitors per minute, and the bar for 40 ≤ t < 60 has a frequency density of 1 visitor per minute. Work out which class contains the median time.
- 14.Four pairs of variables are listed below. Write down the pair that you would expect to show no correlation.
- 15.The times, in seconds, taken by 11 runners to finish a race are given in order: 40, 42, 45, 47, 50, 52, 55, 58, 60, 63, 65. Work out the upper quartile of these times.
