- 1.The numbers 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 have a mean of 7 and a median of 7. The value 100 is now added to the list. Which measure is changed more by adding 100, and why?
- 2.The masses, m kg, of 80 sacks of grain are summarised by these cumulative frequencies: m < 10, 6 sacks; m < 20, 22 sacks; m < 30, 58 sacks; m < 40, 74 sacks; m < 50, 80 sacks. Use interpolation to estimate the median mass.
- 3.A histogram is drawn for the masses, m grams, of 200 letters. The bar for 0 ≤ m < 50 has a frequency density of 1.2 per gram and the bar for 50 ≤ m < 100 has a frequency density of 1.8 per gram. All the remaining letters lie in the class 100 ≤ m < 200. Work out the frequency density of the bar for 100 ≤ m < 200.
- 4.The mean of three numbers is 50. A fourth number, 100, is added to the set. Work out the mean of the four numbers.
- 5.A scatter graph shows the number of days, x, that each of 16 tomato plants was watered and its height, y cm. The line of best fit has equation y = 1.5x + 4. Write down what the 1.5 in this equation tells you about the plants.y = 1.5x + 4
- 6.A scatter graph shows the midday temperature, x °C, and the number of ice creams sold at a seaside kiosk, y. The line of best fit is y = 3x − 20. Give a reason why the y-intercept of this line of best fit is not a sensible estimate of the number of ice creams sold.y = 3x − 20
- 7.An estate agent in Leeds lists the prices of the five houses sold on one street last year: £170,000, £150,000, £580,000, £140,000 and £160,000. A newspaper wants to print one figure for a typical price on this street. Work out the mean and the median, and write down which figure the newspaper should print.
- 8.A garden centre records the heights, in cm, of eleven seedlings. In order, the heights are 5, 9, x, 17, 20, 24, 28, 31, 35, 40, 44, where x is unknown. The interquartile range of the eleven heights is 19 cm. Work out the value of x.
- 9.A school has 1200 pupils. A teacher wants to take a random sample of 60 of them. Write down which of these methods gives a random sample.
- 10.A sports centre in Newcastle asks 60 members which activity they prefer: swimming 15 members, football 25 members, badminton 12 members and other activities 8 members. Work out the angle at the centre of the pie chart sector that represents badminton.
- 11.A scatter graph of the number of hours, x, that pupils revised against their test score, y, has the line of best fit y = 2.5x + 15. Amelia wants a score of at least 80. Work out the least whole number of hours of revision the line of best fit suggests she needs.y = 2.5x + 15
- 12.A school has 1,000 pupils. A student wants to estimate how many of them walk to school, so she asks 8 pupils in her own class. She says her sample is large enough to give a reliable estimate for the whole school. Is she right? Give a reason for your answer.
- 13.A call centre records the length, t seconds, of 100 calls: 0 ≤ t < 20, 15 calls; 20 ≤ t < 30, 24 calls; 30 ≤ t < 50, 40 calls; 50 ≤ t < 80, 21 calls. The manager's target is for a call to be finished in under 35 seconds. Estimate the number of calls that met the target.
- 14.The masses, m kg, of 150 boxes are summarised by these cumulative frequencies: m < 5, 18 boxes; m < 10, 52 boxes; m < 20, 96 boxes; m < 35, 130 boxes; m < 60, 150 boxes. Work out the number of boxes with a mass in the class 10 ≤ m < 20.
- 15.Five friends have heights, in cm, of 150, 152, 155, 158 and 160. A sixth friend, with a height of 170 cm, joins the group. Write down what happens to the mean and the range of the heights once this sixth friend is included.
