- 1.A call centre records the length, t seconds, of 100 calls: 0 ≤ t < 20, 15 calls; 20 ≤ t < 30, 24 calls; 30 ≤ t < 50, 40 calls; 50 ≤ t < 80, 21 calls. The manager's target is for a call to be finished in under 35 seconds. Estimate the number of calls that met the target.
- 2.The marks scored by 11 pupils in a test are given in order: 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36, 39, 42. Work out the lower quartile of these marks.
- 3.The masses, m kg, of 160 fish caught by a trawler in one day are grouped into classes of unequal width: 0 ≤ m < 10, 40 fish; 10 ≤ m < 30, 60 fish; 30 ≤ m < 45, 30 fish; 45 ≤ m < 50, 30 fish. A histogram is to be drawn from this table. Which set of frequency densities, listed in the same order as the classes above, is correct?
- 4.A composite (stacked) bar for a charity bake sale in Durham shows the number of cakes sold, split into three types. The bar has a total height of 80 cakes: 34 were sponge cakes, 26 were chocolate cakes and the rest were fruit cakes. Work out the percentage of the cakes sold that were fruit cakes.
- 5.A bus company runs two routes into the centre of Exeter. On ten weekdays the journey time on Route 1 was, in minutes: 22, 23, 24, 24, 25, 25, 26, 26, 27 and 28. On Route 2 it was: 18, 19, 20, 20, 21, 22, 26, 30, 36 and 38. A commuter must reach the centre on time every day. Work out the mean and the range for each route, and write down which route she should take.
- 6.Work out the median of these six numbers: 13, 21, 22, 36, 37, 47
- 7.The heights, h cm, of 80 plants are grouped like this: 0 ≤ h < 20, 14 plants; 20 ≤ h < 40, 22 plants; 40 ≤ h < 50, 16 plants; 50 ≤ h < 80, 28 plants. Write down the class interval that contains the lower quartile.
- 8.A scatter graph shows the number of hours of sunshine, x, and the number of visitors, y, at an outdoor swimming pool in Torquay on each of 15 days. The line of best fit passes through the points (5, 150) and (15, 350). Work out the estimated number of visitors on a day with 8 hours of sunshine, using the line of best fit.
- 9.The mean mass of four parcels is 17 kg. Three of the parcels have masses 12 kg, 16 kg and 18 kg. Work out the mass of the fourth parcel.
- 10.The delivery times, in minutes, of 15 parcels are given in order: 5, 8, 10, 12, 14, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 31, 34. Work out the interquartile range of these times.
- 11.The numbers 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 have a mean of 7 and a median of 7. The value 100 is now added to the list. Which measure is changed more by adding 100, and why?
- 12.Marta is drawing a cumulative frequency diagram for the times, t seconds, of 100 telephone calls. The grouped frequencies are: 0 ≤ t < 10, 7 calls; 10 ≤ t < 20, 19 calls; 20 ≤ t < 30, 34 calls; 30 ≤ t < 40, 40 calls. Write down the coordinates of the point Marta should plot for the class 20 ≤ t < 30.
- 13.The number of pets owned by each of 19 pupils in a class is recorded: 0 pets — 7 pupils, 1 pet — 3 pupils, 2 pets — 4 pupils, 3 pets — 5 pupils. Work out the median number of pets.
- 14.In a histogram of the masses, m grams, of some pebbles, the bar for the class 50 ≤ m < 80 has a frequency density of 2.4 per gram. Work out the number of pebbles in this class.
- 15.A scatter graph of the number of ice creams sold at a seaside kiosk in Bournemouth and the number of sunburn cases treated at a nearby pharmacy, recorded on the same 30 days, shows strong positive correlation. Which statement about this correlation is correct?
