- 1.A scatter graph of the number of ice creams sold at a seaside kiosk in Bournemouth and the number of sunburn cases treated at a nearby pharmacy, recorded on the same 30 days, shows strong positive correlation. Which statement about this correlation is correct?
- 2.A frequency polygon for the mass, in kg, of 40 parcels at a delivery depot is drawn by plotting one point at the midpoint of each class, joined by straight lines: (5, 6), (15, 10), (25, 16), (35, 6), (45, 2). Every class has a width of 10 kg. Write down the modal class.
- 3.Box plots summarise the test scores of two classes. Class X: minimum 20, lower quartile 45, median 60, upper quartile 70, maximum 95. Class Y: minimum 35, lower quartile 50, median 58, upper quartile 65, maximum 80. Which statement about the two classes is correct?
- 4.The heights, h cm, of 80 plants are grouped like this: 0 ≤ h < 20, 14 plants; 20 ≤ h < 40, 22 plants; 40 ≤ h < 50, 16 plants; 50 ≤ h < 80, 28 plants. Write down the class interval that contains the lower quartile.
- 5.A town council wants to find out about the eating habits of the people who live in the town. It asks only the members of a local sports club. Give a reason why this sample is biased.
- 6.A stacked bar for one day at a café in Norwich shows total drink sales of 50 drinks, split into three parts: 22 were tea, 15 were coffee and the rest were hot chocolate. Work out the number of hot chocolates sold.
- 7.A call centre records the length, t seconds, of 100 calls: 0 ≤ t < 20, 15 calls; 20 ≤ t < 30, 24 calls; 30 ≤ t < 50, 40 calls; 50 ≤ t < 80, 21 calls. The manager's target is for a call to be finished in under 35 seconds. Estimate the number of calls that met the target.
- 8.A composite (stacked) bar for a charity bake sale in Durham shows the number of cakes sold, split into three types. The bar has a total height of 80 cakes: 34 were sponge cakes, 26 were chocolate cakes and the rest were fruit cakes. Work out the percentage of the cakes sold that were fruit cakes.
- 9.The masses of eight school bags, in kilograms, are 3, 4, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 11. Work out the median mass.
- 10.A survey of 25 pupils in Derby records how many siblings each has: 0 siblings — 6 pupils, 1 sibling — 10 pupils, 2 siblings — 6 pupils, 3 siblings — 3 pupils. Calculate the mean number of siblings.
- 11.In a histogram of the times, t minutes, taken by some people to complete a task, the class 15 ≤ t < 30 contains 24 people. Work out the frequency density for this class.
- 12.A histogram shows the times, t minutes, taken by 120 visitors to complete an escape room. The bar for 0 ≤ t < 10 has a frequency density of 5 visitors per minute, the bar for 10 ≤ t < 20 has a frequency density of 2 visitors per minute, the bar for 20 ≤ t < 40 has a frequency density of 1.5 visitors per minute, and the bar for 40 ≤ t < 60 has a frequency density of 1 visitor per minute. Work out which class contains the median time.
- 13.A café in York counts the number of customers in each of the nine hours it is open on one day: 4, 4, 4, 11, 13, 15, 18, 22 and 25. The owner says that a typical hour has about 4 customers, because 4 is the mode. Is the owner right? Give a reason for your answer.
- 14.A box plot for the amount of pocket money, in pounds, saved by 30 students in a month is based on a lower quartile of £18 and an upper quartile of £42. A value above upper quartile + 1.5 × interquartile range is considered an outlier. Amara saved £80 in the month. Determine whether Amara's saving is an outlier.
- 15.A garden centre records the heights, in cm, of eleven seedlings. In order, the heights are 5, 9, x, 17, 20, 24, 28, 31, 35, 40, 44, where x is unknown. The interquartile range of the eleven heights is 19 cm. Work out the value of x.
