- 1.The times, t minutes, taken by 120 runners to finish a fun run are summarised by these cumulative frequencies: t < 20, 8 runners; t < 30, 26 runners; t < 40, 74 runners; t < 50, 110 runners; t < 60, 120 runners. Work out the number of runners who took 40 minutes or longer to finish.
- 2.There are 10,000 pupils in a city. A researcher picks a sample of 500 of them by drawing names at random from a list of every pupil in the city. Give the reason why this method gives a representative sample.
- 3.Box plots summarise the test scores of two classes. Class X: minimum 20, lower quartile 45, median 60, upper quartile 70, maximum 95. Class Y: minimum 35, lower quartile 50, median 58, upper quartile 65, maximum 80. Which statement about the two classes is correct?
- 4.A box plot for the amount of pocket money, in pounds, saved by 30 students in a month is based on a lower quartile of £18 and an upper quartile of £42. A value above upper quartile + 1.5 × interquartile range is considered an outlier. Amara saved £80 in the month. Determine whether Amara's saving is an outlier.
- 5.In a histogram of the heights, h cm, of 90 seedlings, the class 12 ≤ h < 18 contains 36 seedlings. Work out the frequency density for this class.
- 6.A scientist has grouped the lifetimes, in hours, of 300 batteries into classes of unequal width. She wants a diagram in which the number of batteries in a class is given by the area of its bar. Write down the type of diagram she should draw.
- 7.The times, t seconds, taken by 142 competitors to complete a lap are grouped like this: 0 ≤ t < 10, 20 competitors; 10 ≤ t < 25, 12 competitors; 25 ≤ t < 45, 50 competitors; 45 ≤ t < 75, 60 competitors. A histogram is drawn. Write down the class whose bar is the tallest.
- 8.A scatter graph shows the number of hours of sunshine, x, and the number of visitors, y, at an outdoor swimming pool in Torquay on each of 15 days. The line of best fit passes through the points (5, 150) and (15, 350). Work out the estimated number of visitors on a day with 8 hours of sunshine, using the line of best fit.
- 9.A dual bar chart shows the number of hours of rain recorded in Leeds and in Bristol on each of four days. Leeds: Monday 3 hours, Tuesday 5 hours, Wednesday 2 hours, Thursday 4 hours. Bristol: Monday 4 hours, Tuesday 4 hours, Wednesday 6 hours, Thursday 2 hours. Work out the greatest amount, in hours, by which Bristol's rainfall exceeded Leeds's rainfall on a single day.
- 10.A composite (stacked) bar for a charity bake sale in Durham shows the number of cakes sold, split into three types. The bar has a total height of 80 cakes: 34 were sponge cakes, 26 were chocolate cakes and the rest were fruit cakes. Work out the percentage of the cakes sold that were fruit cakes.
- 11.The daily high temperatures, in °C, in Leeds over five days were 14, 16, 18, 19 and 23. In York over the same five days they were 15, 17, 17, 18 and 18. Write a sentence comparing Leeds and York using both the median and the range.
- 12.The masses, m kg, of 160 fish caught by a trawler in one day are grouped into classes of unequal width: 0 ≤ m < 10, 40 fish; 10 ≤ m < 30, 60 fish; 30 ≤ m < 45, 30 fish; 45 ≤ m < 50, 30 fish. A histogram is to be drawn from this table. Which set of frequency densities, listed in the same order as the classes above, is correct?
- 13.In a histogram of the masses, m grams, of some pebbles, the bar for the class 50 ≤ m < 80 has a frequency density of 2.4 per gram. Work out the number of pebbles in this class.
- 14.In a spelling test the 20 pupils in Group A had a mean mark of 80, and the 30 pupils in Group B had a mean mark of 70. Work out the mean mark of all 50 pupils.
- 15.A random sample of 50 pupils at a school were asked whether they prefer sport to music. 30 of the 50 pupils said they prefer sport. The school has 500 pupils altogether. Work out an estimate for the number of the 500 pupils who prefer sport.
