- 1.The times, t minutes, taken by 80 people to travel to work are grouped like this: 0 ≤ t < 10, 6 people; 10 ≤ t < 20, 14 people; 20 ≤ t < 30, 25 people; 30 ≤ t < 40, 20 people; 40 ≤ t < 50, 15 people. Work out the cumulative frequency for t < 30.
- 2.A dual bar chart shows the number of hours of rain recorded in Leeds and in Bristol on each of four days. Leeds: Monday 3 hours, Tuesday 5 hours, Wednesday 2 hours, Thursday 4 hours. Bristol: Monday 4 hours, Tuesday 4 hours, Wednesday 6 hours, Thursday 2 hours. Work out the greatest amount, in hours, by which Bristol's rainfall exceeded Leeds's rainfall on a single day.
- 3.A scatter graph shows the number of hours of sunshine, x, and the number of visitors, y, at an outdoor swimming pool in Torquay on each of 15 days. The line of best fit passes through the points (5, 150) and (15, 350). Work out the estimated number of visitors on a day with 8 hours of sunshine, using the line of best fit.
- 4.The masses, m kg, of 60 parcels are grouped like this: 0 ≤ m < 5, 22 parcels; 5 ≤ m < 10, 20 parcels; 10 ≤ m < 20, 9 parcels; 20 ≤ m < 30, 5 parcels; 30 ≤ m < 50, 4 parcels. Write down the class interval that contains the median mass.
- 5.The 120 pupils in Year 11 at a school sat a maths test. Their marks m are grouped into classes of unequal width: 0 ≤ m < 40, 12 pupils; 40 ≤ m < 60, 24 pupils; 60 ≤ m < 70, 36 pupils; 70 ≤ m ≤ 100, 48 pupils. A histogram is drawn for these data. Work out the frequency density of the class 40 ≤ m < 60.
- 6.A box plot for the ages of 40 members of a gym is drawn from this five-number summary: minimum 15, lower quartile 22, median 29, upper quartile 38, maximum 61. Work out the interquartile range shown by this box plot.
- 7.A histogram is drawn for the masses, m grams, of 200 letters. The bar for 0 ≤ m < 50 has a frequency density of 1.2 per gram and the bar for 50 ≤ m < 100 has a frequency density of 1.8 per gram. All the remaining letters lie in the class 100 ≤ m < 200. Work out the frequency density of the bar for 100 ≤ m < 200.
- 8.In a histogram of the masses, m grams, of some pebbles, the bar for the class 50 ≤ m < 80 has a frequency density of 2.4 per gram. Work out the number of pebbles in this class.
- 9.The mean of 5 numbers is 8. Work out the total of the 5 numbers.
- 10.The masses, m grams, of 100 apples are grouped like this: 100 ≤ m < 120, 10 apples; 120 ≤ m < 140, 30 apples; 140 ≤ m < 160, 40 apples; 160 ≤ m < 200, 20 apples. Estimate the median mass.
- 11.The numbers 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 have a mean of 7 and a median of 7. The value 100 is now added to the list. Which measure is changed more by adding 100, and why?
- 12.A two-way table records whether each of the 30 pupils in a class passed maths and whether they passed science. 18 pupils passed maths, 12 pupils passed science and 8 pupils passed both. Work out how many pupils passed at least one of the two subjects.
- 13.A town council wants to find out about the eating habits of the people who live in the town. It asks only the members of a local sports club. Give a reason why this sample is biased.
- 14.A scatter graph shows the height, x cm, and the mass, y kg, of 20 pupils in Year 10. The heights on the graph run from 150 cm to 180 cm, and the line of best fit is y = 0.9x − 85. Nadia puts x = 90 into this equation to estimate the mass of a two-year-old child who is 90 cm tall. Is her estimate reliable? Give a reason for your answer.y = 0.9x − 85
- 15.A factory made 3,000 phone cases last week. Shift A checked a random sample of 100 cases and found that 34 were scratched. Shift B checked a different random sample of 50 cases and found that 21 were scratched. Using the COMBINED results from both shifts, work out an estimate for the number of scratched cases made last week.
