- 1.The 120 pupils in Year 11 at a school sat a maths test. Their marks m are grouped into classes of unequal width: 0 ≤ m < 40, 12 pupils; 40 ≤ m < 60, 24 pupils; 60 ≤ m < 70, 36 pupils; 70 ≤ m ≤ 100, 48 pupils. A histogram is drawn for these data. Work out the frequency density of the class 40 ≤ m < 60.
- 2.An estate agent in Leeds lists the prices of the five houses sold on one street last year: £170,000, £150,000, £580,000, £140,000 and £160,000. A newspaper wants to print one figure for a typical price on this street. Work out the mean and the median, and write down which figure the newspaper should print.
- 3.In a random sample of 40 pupils at a school, 6 are left-handed. The school has 900 pupils. Work out an estimate for the number of left-handed pupils in the school.
- 4.A two-way table records the favourite subject, Maths or Art, of 60 pupils in Year 10, and whether each pupil is left-handed or right-handed. 9 of the 60 pupils are left-handed, and 6 of those left-handed pupils prefer Art. In total, 24 of the 60 pupils prefer Art. A pupil is chosen at random from the 60. Work out the probability that the pupil is right-handed and prefers Art.
- 5.A two-way table records whether each of 40 people at a gym in Sheffield prefers weights or cardio, and whether they are male or female. 24 of the 40 people are female. 15 of the males prefer cardio. 10 of the females prefer weights. Work out the total number of people who prefer cardio.
- 6.The mean of five test scores is 68. Four of the scores are 55, 62, 74 and 80. Work out the fifth score.
- 7.A scientist has grouped the lifetimes, in hours, of 300 batteries into classes of unequal width. She wants a diagram in which the number of batteries in a class is given by the area of its bar. Write down the type of diagram she should draw.
- 8.A scatter graph shows the mass, x kg, of a parcel and the cost, y pounds, of posting it. The line of best fit is y = 1.5x + 2. Work out the estimated cost of posting a parcel with a mass of 6 kg, using the line of best fit.y = 1.5x + 2
- 9.Five friends have heights, in cm, of 150, 152, 155, 158 and 160. A sixth friend, with a height of 170 cm, joins the group. Write down what happens to the mean and the range of the heights once this sixth friend is included.
- 10.The masses, m grams, of 100 apples are grouped like this: 100 ≤ m < 120, 10 apples; 120 ≤ m < 140, 30 apples; 140 ≤ m < 160, 40 apples; 160 ≤ m < 200, 20 apples. Estimate the median mass.
- 11.The masses, m kg, of 150 boxes are summarised by these cumulative frequencies: m < 5, 18 boxes; m < 10, 52 boxes; m < 20, 96 boxes; m < 35, 130 boxes; m < 60, 150 boxes. Work out the number of boxes with a mass in the class 10 ≤ m < 20.
- 12.The times taken, in minutes, by 30 runners in a Portsmouth fun run are grouped in this table: 0 < t ≤ 20 — 5 runners, 20 < t ≤ 40 — 10 runners, 40 < t ≤ 60 — 10 runners, 60 < t ≤ 80 — 5 runners. Work out an estimate for the mean time, in minutes.
- 13.The mean of the numbers x, 20 and 30 is equal to the mean of the numbers 15 and 25. Work out the value of x.
- 14.There are 10,000 pupils in a city. A researcher picks a sample of 500 of them by drawing names at random from a list of every pupil in the city. Give the reason why this method gives a representative sample.
- 15.Work out the median of these six numbers: 13, 21, 22, 36, 37, 47
