- 1.Work out an estimate for 6.4 × 3.9, by rounding each number to the nearest whole number.
- 2.A coach company charges a booking fee plus a price for each passenger. A booking for 1 passenger costs £9, for 2 passengers costs £15, for 3 passengers costs £21, and for 4 passengers costs £27. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the cost in pounds of a booking for n passengers.
- 3.x is 2/3 of y. Write the ratio x : y in its simplest form.
- 4.Put sin 30°, tan 30° and cos 30° in order of size, starting with the smallest.
- 5.A garage tested 200 cars in one week. 70% of the cars were more than 3 years old and the rest were 3 years old or less. Of the cars more than 3 years old, 1 in 4 failed the test. 12 of the cars that were 3 years old or less failed the test. Work out how many of the 200 cars failed the test altogether.
- 6.The mean of the four numbers 10, 15, 20 and x is 18. Work out the value of x.
- 7.Write the fraction 3/4 as a decimal.
- 8.A table shows values of y = x² − x − 6 for x from −3 to 4: at x = −3, y = 6; x = −2, y = 0; x = −1, y = −4; x = 0, y = −6; x = 1, y = −6; x = 2, y = −4; x = 3, y = 0; x = 4, y = 6. Using the table, write down the two roots of x² − x − 6 = 0.y = x²
- 9.In a bag the ratio of red counters to blue counters is 7 : 4. Write the number of red counters as a fraction of the number of blue counters.
- 10.A triangle has vertices A(1, 1), B(5, 1) and C(5, 4). Work out the lengths of AB, BC and CA, and write down whether triangle ABC is right-angled.
- 11.A garden centre tests 250 packets of seeds for germination, recording the results on a frequency tree. 68% of the 250 packets germinated successfully, and the rest did not. Work out how many packets germinated successfully.
- 12.A student always writes the digits after the decimal point over a denominator of 100, whatever the number of decimal places. Using this wrong rule, they convert 0.9 to a fraction. Work out the correct fraction that 0.9 is equal to, giving your answer in its simplest form.
- 13.Work out the coordinates of the point halfway between (−9, −2) and (−1, −2).
- 14.Four graphs are described below. Each shows one quantity plotted against another. Write down the description of the graph that shows two quantities in direct proportion.
- 15.Two similar triangles have lengths in the ratio 3 : 4. The perimeter of the smaller triangle is 24 cm. Work out the perimeter of the larger triangle.
- 16.A jug holds 1.25 litres of water. Ella pours in another 400 ml. Work out the total volume, in litres.
- 17.A zip-line runs from a platform 25 m high to a landing point 5 m high, over a horizontal distance of 40 m. Work out the gradient of the zip-line.
- 18.Isla says that the ratio 4:6 is equivalent to the ratio 6:9. Is she correct? Give a reason for your answer.
- 19.Work out 6² − 4².
- 20.An oven is preheating. Its temperature, T °C, is plotted against time, t minutes, on a straight-line graph. The line passes through the points (2, 60) and (6, 140). Work out the gradient of the line.
