GCSE Higher sample Paper 2 (calculator)
The real Paper 2 is 1.5 hour 30 minutes and 80 marks, calculator, and all three papers carry equal weight. This sample is 20 original questions in the same content proportions as the Higher qualification — number 15%, algebra 30%, ratio, proportion and rates of change 20%, geometry and measures 20%, probability 7.5%, statistics 7.5% — with a calculator allowed. AO1 / AO2 / AO3 at this tier: 40% / 30% / 30%.
GCSE Higher sample Paper 2 (calculator)
- 1.A quarter-circle has a radius of 6 cm. Work out the exact perimeter of the quarter-circle, giving your answer in terms of π.
- 2.How many turning points does the graph of y = x² − 7x + 10 have?y = x² − 7x + 10
- 3.At an animal shelter, the ratio of cats to dogs is 2:5. There are 18 more dogs than cats. Work out the number of cats.
- 4.Square B has vertices (1, 1), (4, 1), (4, 4) and (1, 4). It is rotated 90° clockwise about the origin, and the image is then translated by the vector (2, −1). Work out the coordinates of the image of (4, 1).
- 5.A charity raffle sells 250 tickets. A group of friends buy 40 of the tickets between them. Three prizes are awarded, each to a different randomly drawn ticket, and no ticket can win more than one prize. Work out the expected number of prizes won by the group. Give your answer as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 6.The times, t seconds, taken by 142 competitors to complete a lap are grouped like this: 0 ≤ t < 10, 20 competitors; 10 ≤ t < 25, 12 competitors; 25 ≤ t < 45, 50 competitors; 45 ≤ t < 75, 60 competitors. A histogram is drawn. Write down the class whose bar is the tallest.
- 7.Rationalise the denominator of 10/(4 − √6), giving your answer in its simplest form.
- 8.Work out the maximum value of y = sin x, and the smallest positive value of x, in degrees, at which it occurs.y = sin(x)
- 9.In a fruit drink, 3/8 of the total volume is orange juice and the rest is apple juice. Write down the ratio of orange juice to apple juice, in its simplest form.
- 10.The top of a clock tower is 25 m above level ground. Oliver stands on the ground 25 m from the foot of the tower. Work out the angle of elevation of the top of the tower from the point where Oliver stands.
- 11.A raffle has two independent draws. In the first, a winning ticket is picked at random from 5 red tickets and 3 blue tickets. In the second, a winning number is picked using a fair spinner with 4 equal sections, numbered 1 to 4. Work out the probability that the first winning ticket is blue and the second winning number is greater than 2.
- 12.Work out 5/6 × 2/9, giving your answer in its simplest form.
- 13.The formula for the volume of a cuboid is V = lwh, where l is the length, w is the width and h is the height. Make h the subject of the formula.
- 14.Two quantities, P and Q, are in inverse proportion. A graph is drawn with P on the vertical axis and Q on the horizontal axis. Write down which description fits the shape of this graph.
- 15.PT is a tangent to a circle with centre O, touching the circle at T. C is a point on the circle such that C lies inside angle OTP (the right angle between the radius OT and the tangent PT), and OC is a radius. Angle TOC = 130°. Work out the size of angle PTC, the angle between the tangent PT and the chord TC.
- 16.Write y = x² + 12x + 40 in the form (x + a)² + b, and hence write down the minimum value of y.y = x² + 12x + 40
- 17.A recipe for pastry uses flour and butter in the ratio 3:2. A baker has 180 g of butter and wants to make pastry using all of it. Work out the total mass of pastry the baker can make.
- 18.Triangle ABC has AB = (2x + 3) cm, BC = 11 cm and angle B = 90°. Triangle DEF has DE = 13 cm, EF = 11 cm and angle E = 90°. Given that the two triangles are congruent by SAS, work out the value of x.
- 19.A proof that the product of two consecutive even numbers is always a multiple of 8 begins: Let the two consecutive even numbers be 2n and 2n + 2, so their product is 2n(2n + 2) = 4n(n + 1). Which line correctly completes the proof?
- 20.The graph of y = 20/x is drawn for x > 0. As the value of x increases, what happens to the value of y?
How the 20 questions are shared out
