- 1.A rectangular patio measures 90 cm by 120 cm. Ben wants to cover it exactly with identical square tiles, as large as possible, with no tiles cut. Work out the side length of the largest square tile he can use.
- 2.A straight line passes through the points (2, 5) and (4, 11). Work out the gradient of the line.
- 3.A car travels 180 miles in 3 hours. A lorry travels 160 miles in 4 hours. Write the car's average speed as a fraction of the lorry's average speed, giving your answer in its simplest form.
- 4.OABC is a parallelogram, with OA = a and OC = c. M is the midpoint of OC, and N is the point on AC such that AN is twice NC. By finding the vectors MN and MB, show that M, N and B are collinear, and give the scalar k such that MN = k × MB.
- 5.In a certain town, P(rain on Monday) = 0.3. If it rains on Monday, the probability that it also rains on Tuesday is 0.6. If it does not rain on Monday, the probability that it rains on Tuesday is 0.25. Work out the probability that it rains on Tuesday.
- 6.The mean of 5 numbers is 8. Work out the total of the 5 numbers.
- 7.A rectangular plywood panel measures 2.4 m by 0.75 m. Work out the area of the panel in square metres, giving your answer as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 8.f(x) = 2x² + 1 and g(x) = x − 1. Work out fg(x), giving your answer in expanded form.y = 2x² + 1
- 9.A tangent to the graph of population against time at the point where t = 4 passes through (2, 180) and (6, 260). Work out the instantaneous rate of change of the population at t = 4, in people per year.
- 10.In triangle ABC, AB = 5 cm, BC = 3 cm and AC = 7 cm. Work out the size of angle ABC.
- 11.A four-colour spinner (red, blue, green, yellow) is spun repeatedly, and the relative frequency of landing on green is recorded as the number of spins increases: after 20 spins it is 0.350; after 200 spins it is 0.290; after 2000 spins it is 0.251. Using the result from 2000 spins as the best estimate of the probability, work out the number of times the spinner would be expected to land on green in a further 3000 spins.
- 12.A choir has sopranos, altos and tenors in the ratio 6 : 4 : 5. What fraction of the choir is not tenors?
- 13.A triangle has vertices at (1, 1), (1, 5) and (6, 1). Work out the area of the triangle.
- 14.The tangent to a curve at the point where x = 4 has equation y = 3x − 2. Work out the instantaneous rate of change of y with respect to x at x = 4.y = 3x − 2
- 15.A party hat is in the shape of a cone with a base radius of 6 cm and a slant height of 10 cm. Work out the curved surface area of the party hat. Use π = 3.14 and the formula curved surface area = πrl.
- 16.The first four terms of a sequence are 2, 2√3, 6, 6√3, ... Work out the next term.
- 17.A scale drawing of a park has a scale of 1 : 2500. On the drawing, the distance between the entrance and the lake is 4.4 cm. A jogger runs from the entrance to the lake and then back to the entrance. Work out the total distance the jogger runs, in kilometres.
- 18.P is the point (3, 4) and Q is the point (6, 0). Work out the distance of each point from the origin, and write down which point is closer to the origin.
- 19.A cuboid has a square base of side x metres and a height that is 3 m more than x. Its volume is 150 m³. This gives the equation x³ + 3x² − 150 = 0, which can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = ∛(150 − 3xₙ²). Taking x₀ = 4, work out x₂ correct to 2 decimal places.
- 20.f(x) = x³ − 5x − 6. Given that f(2.6) = −1.424 and f(2.7) = 0.183, work out what this shows about the equation x³ − 5x − 6 = 0.y = x
