- 1.A number is multiplied by 4, then 8 is added, giving the result 40. Work out the number.
- 2.A table of values is being drawn for the graph of y = x³. Work out the value of y when x = −2.y = x
- 3.A cyclist's distance travelled, in metres, is recorded against time, in seconds. From t = 3 to t = 8 the distance increases from 12 m to 32 m. A tangent to the distance–time graph at t = 6 has gradient 3. Work out the average speed of the cyclist over the interval from t = 3 to t = 8.
- 4.A shop stacks identical storage crates in a display. The diagram shows the plan of the floor positions used, with one corner position marked. Every floor position is filled with crates stacked 3 high, except the marked corner position, which is left completely empty. Work out how many crates are used in total.
- 5.A two-way table records how 180 students at a school travel: by bus or on foot, split by year group. There are 84 students in Year 11, of whom 38 travel by bus and the rest walk. The rest of the 180 students are in Year 10, and 42 of the Year 10 students travel by bus. Work out the probability that a randomly chosen Year 10 student walks to school. Give your answer as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 6.A scatter graph shows the height, x cm, and the mass, y kg, of 20 pupils in Year 10. The heights on the graph run from 150 cm to 180 cm, and the line of best fit is y = 0.9x − 85. Nadia puts x = 90 into this equation to estimate the mass of a two-year-old child who is 90 cm tall. Is her estimate reliable? Give a reason for your answer.y = 0.9x − 85
- 7.Ten athletes run in a final. Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded to the first three athletes to finish, and there are no ties. Work out how many different ways the three medals can be awarded.
- 8.A rope of length L metres is cut into 6 equal pieces, and 4 metres is then removed from one piece. Write an expression, in metres, for the length of that piece after the cut.
- 9.A kettle uses 2.1 kWh of energy. A toaster uses 0.9 kWh of energy. Write the energy used by the kettle as a fraction of the energy used by the toaster, giving your answer in its simplest form.
- 10.A right-angled triangle has its two shorter sides equal to 8 cm and 15 cm. Work out the value of cos θ, where θ is the angle opposite the 8 cm side. Give your answer as a fraction.
- 11.A garage services 200 cars in one week. 120 of the cars are petrol cars and the rest are diesel cars. 30 of the petrol cars and 24 of the diesel cars fail the service. One of the cars that failed is picked at random. Work out the probability that it is a diesel car.
- 12.At a book fair the ratio of fiction books to non-fiction books is 4 : 5. Of the non-fiction books, 3/5 are about history. Work out the fraction of all the books at the fair that are history books.
- 13.Work out the value of the discriminant b² − 4ac for the equation 2x² + 3x − 2 = 0.
- 14.A map has a scale of 1 : 25 000. Two towns are 5 km apart in real life. Work out the distance between the towns on the map, in centimetres.
- 15.A triangular solar panel has two edges of length 1.8 m and 1.3 m, with an angle of 72° between them. Manufacturing the panel costs £85 per square metre. Work out the total manufacturing cost. Give your answer to the nearest penny.
- 16.A car park charges a £4 fixed fee plus £3 for each hour. Kofi has exactly £25 to spend on parking. Using the inequality 4 + 3h ≤ 25, work out the greatest number of whole hours, h, he can park for.
- 17.A car travels at a constant speed. It travels 150 miles in 3 hours. At the same speed, work out how far it travels in 5 hours.
- 18.Sam says: '3.2 litres is the same as 320 ml, because you multiply by 100.' Which statement about Sam's claim is correct?
- 19.A student claims: 'For every positive integer n, n² + n + 1 is a prime number.' Which value of n shows that this claim is false?
- 20.The nth term of a sequence is n² + 2n − 4. Work out the 7th term.
