- 1.A pizza is cut into 12 equal slices. Ben eats 5 slices and Mia eats 3 slices. What fraction of the pizza is left, giving your answer in its simplest form?
- 2.A ramp rises 3 m over a horizontal distance of 12 m. Work out the gradient of the ramp.
- 3.A recipe needs 1.2 kg of flour. Dan has 750 g of flour in his cupboard. Write the mass of flour the recipe needs as a fraction of the mass of flour Dan has. Give your answer in its simplest form.
- 4.In triangle ABC, AB = 6 cm, angle ABC = 40° and AC = 9 cm. Using the sine rule, sin(ACB) = AB × sin(ABC) ÷ AC, which gives two possible values for angle ACB: 25.4° or 154.6° (each to 1 decimal place). By considering the angle sum of the triangle, decide which of these two values angle ACB can actually take, and hence work out angle BAC. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 5.A garage services 200 cars in one week. 120 of the cars are petrol cars and the rest are diesel cars. 30 of the petrol cars and 24 of the diesel cars fail the service. One of the cars that failed is picked at random. Work out the probability that it is a diesel car.
- 6.The masses of eight school bags, in kilograms, are 3, 4, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 11. Work out the median mass.
- 7.A supermarket sells apples at £1.85 per kg. Anna buys 3.6 kg of apples. Estimate the cost by rounding each number to 1 significant figure before multiplying. Work out Anna's estimate.
- 8.A geometric sequence has first term 4 and common ratio √2. Work out the sum of the first three terms of the sequence, giving your answer in the form a + b√2.
- 9.A tap fills a tank at a rate of 15 litres per minute. Given that 1 litre = 1000 cm³, work out the rate at which the tank fills in cm³ per second.
- 10.Points P and Q have coordinates P(0, 0, 0) and Q(5, 7, 9) in a three-dimensional coordinate system, with all lengths in centimetres. Work out the distance PQ. Give your answer correct to 1 decimal place.
- 11.Five raffle tickets numbered 1 to 5 are in a bag. Two tickets are drawn one after the other and the first is not put back. Work out the probability that ticket 1 is drawn first and ticket 2 is drawn second.
- 12.Without using a calculator, estimate the value of √70 × ∛65, giving your answer to 1 significant figure.
- 13.A ribbon of length L metres is cut into 5 equal pieces, and then 3 metres is removed from one piece. Write down an expression, in metres, for the length of that piece after 3 metres is removed.
- 14.A charity collects donations from adults and children in the ratio 5:2. Altogether, £238 is collected. Work out how much more the adults donate than the children.
- 15.A surveyor marks two fixed points A and B, with position vectors OA = a and OB = b (in km) from a base station O. A relay mast P is to be placed on the line AB such that AP : PB = 3 : 2. Express the vector OP in terms of a and b.
- 16.A proof sets out to show that the sum of the squares of two consecutive odd numbers, written as 2n + 1 and 2n + 3, is always 2 more than a multiple of 8. Four attempts to expand (2n + 1)² + (2n + 3)² and reach a conclusion are shown below. Which attempt correctly proves this claim?
- 17.A cartographer is choosing a scale for a map to show a small park in as much detail as possible. Which of these scales would show the MOST detail — 1 : 500, 1 : 5000, or 1 : 50 000? Give the correct scale and reason.
- 18.The vector describes a translation. A student writes it as by mistake. Write down what error the student has made.
- 19.The graph of P = 480 ÷ V shows how the pressure, P pascals, of a gas depends on its volume, V cm³, at constant temperature. Use the relationship to work out the volume when the pressure is 32 pascals, and then work out by how much the volume increases when the pressure drops to 24 pascals.
- 20.The area of a triangle is given by the formula A = bh/2, where b is the base and h is the height. Make h the subject of the formula.
How the 20 questions are shared out
- Number — 3 questions (15% of the qualification)
- Algebra — 6 questions (30% of the qualification)
- Ratio, proportion and rates of change — 4 questions (20% of the qualification)
- Geometry and measures — 4 questions (20% of the qualification)
- Probability — 2 questions (7.5% of the qualification)
- Statistics — 1 question (7.5% of the qualification)
Where an area has fewer printable questions than its share, the shortfall is filled from the other areas. These are original questions, not past papers.
