GCSE Higher sample Paper 2 (calculator)
The real Paper 2 is 1.5 hour 30 minutes and 80 marks, calculator, and all three papers carry equal weight. This sample is 20 original questions in the same content proportions as the Higher qualification — number 15%, algebra 30%, ratio, proportion and rates of change 20%, geometry and measures 20%, probability 7.5%, statistics 7.5% — with a calculator allowed. AO1 / AO2 / AO3 at this tier: 40% / 30% / 30%.

- 1.Write 200 as a product of its prime factors, using index notation.
- 2.The graph of y = f(x) has x-intercepts at x = −2 and x = 6 and crosses the y-axis at (0, −12). Work out the x-intercepts and the y-intercept of y = −f(x).
- 3.A graph shows y plotted against x. The graph is a curve that gets closer to both axes but never touches them, and y decreases as x increases. Write down whether this graph could show direct proportion, inverse proportion, or neither.
- 4.A sector of a circle has radius 9 cm and angle 120°. Using π = 3.14, work out the arc length of the sector, to 1 decimal place.
- 5.A two-way table records how 180 students at a school travel: by bus or on foot, split by year group. There are 84 students in Year 11, of whom 38 travel by bus and the rest walk. The rest of the 180 students are in Year 10, and 42 of the Year 10 students travel by bus. Work out the probability that a randomly chosen Year 10 student walks to school. Give your answer as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 6.Four pairs of variables are listed below. Write down the pair that you would expect to show negative correlation.
- 7.Write 7/12 as a decimal, showing clearly which digit is recurring.
- 8.Water is poured into a container at a constant rate. A graph of the depth of the water, in cm, against the time since pouring began, in minutes, is a straight line through the origin, and it passes through the point (3, 12). Use the graph to work out the depth of the water after 7 minutes.
- 9.To make a shade of green paint, the amount of yellow paint used is always 0.75 times the amount of blue paint used. Write the amount of blue paint as a fraction of the amount of yellow paint, in its simplest form.
- 10.A rectangular notice board measures 150 cm by 80 cm. Work out its area in m².
- 11.A bag contains 5 red counters and 3 blue counters. A counter is taken at random, its colour is noted, and it is put back in the bag before a second counter is taken at random. Work out the probability that both counters are the same colour.
- 12.A cube-shaped storage box has edges of length 7 cm. A shelf can hold a total volume of 2,000 cm³. Work out the greatest number of these boxes that will fit in that volume.
- 13.A packet contains s sweets. The sweets are shared equally between f friends. Write an expression for the number of sweets each friend receives.
- 14.Tap A fills a swimming pool in 6 hours. Tap B pours water twice as fast as tap A. The time taken to fill the pool is inversely proportional to the rate of flow. Work out how long tap B takes to fill the pool.
- 15.Triangle JKL and triangle MNP are similar, with JK ÷ MN = JL ÷ MP = 2. A student says triangle JKL must be congruent to triangle MNP. Write down why the student is wrong.
- 16.To rearrange the formula y = 3x − 8 to make x the subject, Priya writes: 'Add 8 to both sides to get y + 8 = 3x, then divide both sides by 3 to get x = y + 8 ÷ 3.' Work out the correct expression for x.y = 3x − 8
- 17.A laptop priced at £520 is first increased by 15%, and then the new price is decreased by 20%. Work out the final price of the laptop.
- 18.In triangle ABC, angle ABC = 58°, angle ACB = 47° and BC = 14 cm. Work out the area of triangle ABC. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 19.Point R has coordinates (3, −5). Point R is reflected in the line y = 2 to point S. Write down the coordinates of S.
- 20.The table shows the rate at which water flows from a tank, in litres per minute, over a 6-minute period: 12 at t = 0 min, 12 at t = 2 min, 3 at t = 5 min, and 0 at t = 6 min. Between t = 0 and t = 2 the rate is constant. Between t = 2 and t = 5, and between t = 5 and t = 6, the rate decreases at a constant rate in each section. Estimate the total volume of water that has flowed out, using the areas of a rectangle and two trapeziums.
