- 1.Write down 0.2x with its coefficient written as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 2.y = x + 4. Work out the value of y when x = 3.y = x + 4
- 3.The formula y = x² + 1 gives y in terms of x. Work out the value of y when x = −2.y = x² + 1
- 4.The first five square numbers are 1, 4, 9, 16, 25. Write down the next square number in the sequence.
- 5.A table shows y = x² − 6x + 5 at these points (x, y): (0, 5), (1, 0), (2, −3), (3, −4), (4, −3), (5, 0), (6, 5). Using the symmetry shown, write down the x-coordinate of the turning point.y = x² − 6x + 5
- 6.a = 2 and b = 5. Work out the value of a²b.
- 7.The braking distance of a car, in metres, is estimated using the formula d = 0.4v² + 6, where v is the speed in mph. A car travelling at 35 mph brakes. Work out the estimated braking distance.
- 8.Solve the simultaneous equations 3x + 2y = 16 and x + y = 7. Work out the value of y.
- 9.The graph of y = x² − 5x + 6 crosses the x-axis at two points. By factorising, work out the x-coordinates of these two points.y = x² − 5x + 6
- 10.Two numbers have a sum of 50. The larger number is twice the smaller number. Work out the smaller number.
- 11.Make c the subject of the formula k = 6c.
- 12.A caterer uses the formula C = 6p + 20 to work out the total cost, £C, of a buffet for p people, where £20 covers fixed costs. A customer is charged £92. Work out how many people, p, the buffet was for.
- 13.To rearrange y = 2x − 5 to make x the subject, Sam writes: 'Add 5 to both sides to get y + 5 = 2x, then divide both sides by 2 to get x = (y + 5)/2.' Which statement about Sam's method is correct?y = 2x − 5
- 14.Oliver buys b pens. Each pen costs £2. Write down an expression for the total cost, in pounds.
- 15.Work out the value of 4p² − 3 when p = 2.5
