- 1.A student always writes the digits after the decimal point over a denominator of 100, whatever the number of decimal places. Using this wrong rule, they convert 0.9 to a fraction. Work out the correct fraction that 0.9 is equal to, giving your answer in its simplest form.
- 2.Simplify x⁵ × x³ ÷ x², giving your answer as a single power of x.
- 3.A car manufacturer offers a car in 6 colours and 4 trim levels. Two colour-and-trim combinations are not available: red with sport trim, and white with sport trim. Work out how many different colour-and-trim combinations are available.
- 4.A lift has a safe working load of 500 kg. Four people get in the lift and the lift's display records their total mass as 493 kg, correct to the nearest kg. Decide whether the four people are definitely within the safe working load.
- 5.Work out (2/3)² + (1/2)². Give your answer as a fraction.
- 6.Work out the value of ∛8.
- 7.3.4 × 10⁵ is written as an ordinary number. Work out this number.
- 8.A jug holds 3 1/3 litres of juice. Each glass holds 2/3 of a litre. Work out how many glasses can be filled from the jug.

- 10.A block of butter has a mass of 250 g, correct to the nearest 10 g. Using m for the mass of the block in grams, write down the error interval for m.
- 11.In standard form, 2,000 is written as 2 × 10ⁿ. Write down the value of n.
- 12.Work out −(−3)⁴ + (−3)³
- 13.Work out 2⁵.
- 14.In a music collection, the ratio of pop albums to rock albums is 5 : 3. Work out the number of rock albums as a fraction of the number of pop albums.
- 15.Work out 3/7 × 14/9. Give your answer as a fraction in its simplest form.
