- 1.Write these numbers in order, starting with the smallest: 5, −8, 0, −3, 2
- 2.A carpenter has a plank of wood 4.8 m long. She cuts off 3 pieces, each 0.9 m long, to make shelves. Work out the length of wood remaining.
- 3.3/5 of the students in a year group walk to school. 90 students walk to school. Work out the total number of students in the year group.
- 4.Amelia has 49 boxes of apples with 21 apples in each box. Work out an estimate for the total number of apples, by rounding each number to 1 significant figure.
- 5.A square petri dish has an area of 121 mm². A scientist wants to know its side length. Work out the side length of the dish.
- 6.A length, L cm, has the error interval 24.5 ≤ L < 25.5. Write down the degree of accuracy to which the length was measured.
- 7.Work out the lowest common multiple of 9 and 15.
- 8.A roll of ribbon is 8.4 m long. Ribbon is cut into pieces that are each 0.6 m long. Work out how many complete pieces can be cut from the roll.
- 9.A laptop costs £720. A carrying case for it costs 1/9 of the price of the laptop. Work out the cost of the carrying case.
- 10.Write 90 as a product of its prime factors.
- 11.A vending machine sells 4 types of crisps, 5 types of chocolate bar and 2 types of drink. Work out how many different combinations of one crisp packet, one chocolate bar and one drink can be bought.
- 12.A box holds 140 pens. 25% of the pens are red. Work out how many of the pens are red.
- 13.Petrol costs £1.48 per litre. Sam buys 35 litres and pays with three £20 notes. Work out his change.
- 14.A school orders 187 packed lunches for a trip. Each packed lunch costs £4.85. The school has £900 to spend. By rounding each number to 1 significant figure, work out an estimate for the total cost and decide whether £900 is enough.
- 15.In a class, 1/3 of the pupils are girls. There are 12 girls in the class. Work out how many pupils are in the class.
