- 1.A market trader buys 8 melons at £1.35 each. He sells all of them for a total of £15.60. Work out his profit.
- 2.3.4 × 10⁵ is written as an ordinary number. Work out this number.
- 3.A semicircle has a diameter of 8 cm. Work out the exact area of the semicircle, in terms of π.
- 4.A company sells 4 × 10³ items per day, each priced at £2.50. It operates for 3 × 10² days a year. Work out the company's total revenue for the year. Give your answer in standard form.
- 5.Estimate the value of √45, giving your answer to the nearest whole number.
- 6.A country has an area of 25,000,000 hectares. Write this area in standard form.
- 7.The rainfall in a town during April is recorded as 62.4 mm, correct to 1 decimal place. Write down the error interval for the actual rainfall, r mm.
- 8.Work out 8% of £250.
- 9.In a school long jump competition Priya's jump is recorded as 3.8 m and Nadia's jump is recorded as 3.9 m, each correct to the nearest 0.1 m. Priya says she may have jumped further than Nadia. Decide whether Priya is right, and give a reason for your answer.
- 10.A recipe states that a cake needs 200 g of flour, correct to the nearest 25 g. Work out the smallest possible mass of flour, in grams, that could actually be used.
- 11.Simplify 2³ × 2⁴, giving your answer as a single power of 2.
- 12.A flight departs at 21:35 and lands at 06:10 the following morning. Work out the total flight time.

- 14.A block of butter has a mass of 250 g, correct to the nearest 10 g. Using m for the mass of the block in grams, write down the error interval for m.
- 15.Work out an estimate for 6.4 × 3.9, by rounding each number to the nearest whole number.
